4 million homeless animals.
Read that number again.
According to animal welfare data, roughly 22% of South Africa’s pet population is without a home—over 3.4 million roaming the streets as strays and over 600,000 languishing in overcrowded shelters.
Yet, every single day on local classifieds and social media, thousands of rands change hands to buy purebred puppies from backyard breeders and unregulated puppy mills.
Why does this disconnect exist? Mostly, it comes down to a lack of awareness and persistent myths:
❌ "Shelter animals are damaged or aggressive."
👉 Reality: Most shelter pets end up in rescues due to owner financial hardship or lifestyle changes—not behavioral flaws.
❌ "I can only get a healthy or specific breed from a breeder."
👉 Reality: Backyard breeding often leads to severe hereditary health issues. Plus, roughly 25% of shelter animals are purebreds.
The Reality Check:
When we buy from unchecked online sellers, we unintentionally fund an industry that fuels the overpopulation crisis while shelters are forced to make devastating decisions due to lack of space.
How we can drive change:
1️⃣ Adopt, Don’t Shop: Rescuing saves two lives—the animal you take home and the shelter pet who gets your empty spot.
2️⃣ Sterilise Your Pets: Spaying and neutering is the #1 way to stop unwanted litters.
3️⃣ Demand Accountability: If you ever buy from a breeder, inspect their facilities in person, verify parent care, and ensure ethical standards.
4️⃣ Support Local Rescues: Donate time, supplies, or funds to your local SPCA or animal shelter.
Every time a pet is bought from an unregulated breeder, a shelter animal loses their chance at a home. Let's raise awareness and change the narrative in South Africa. 🐾🇿🇦

These tiny little fur babies are looking for safe, loving foster homes while we help them find their forever families. 🏡🐱

🙏 Can you open your heart and home to a kitten in need?

You don't have to foster forever. Even a temporary safe place can make a world of difference to a little life. ❤️

✅ All kittens have been tested and are negative for FIV (feline HIV) and FeLV (feline leukaemia virus).

🐾 We will supply the food and veterinary assistance while they are in foster care and help find them loving forever homes.

All they need from you is a safe space, a little love and some cuddles! 🥰
