Fast play increases arousal chemicals in the brain and body, and adrenaline is produced.

Once play is stopped, though, a dog still experiences elevated arousal levels and can react to stimuli. Blood sugar decreases in the prefrontal cortex and bad choices can happen.

Many dogs need to decompress after play. Otherwise, “trigger stacking” can occur, a layering of stressful events in a short time causing extreme reactions.

Monitor play and impose breaks that last a few seconds to keep it in check.

If your dog is a fast, hard player, try substituting social walks with friends, scenting games, and sniffaris. Or, limit the time of a play date and follow it with one of these.

Ever have one of those days where a dozen little things just went slightly not right and you came home and the milk you thought was fine turns out to be spoiled and you just lose it? That is trigger stacking. It happens to dogs too. Where a few smaller stressors compound until a dog has a major emotional explosion (reactivity episode, perhaps they demonstrate some aggressive over reactions to something, or they bolt racing away from something that normally might not have caused such a reaction.) It's really important when we are working with dogs prone to Big Feelings that we keep an eye out for trigger stacking situations. One of the reasons we advocate for shorter, easier training sessions over longer, more difficult ones! It helps prevent trigger stacking! When faced with a situation that might be triggering for your dog remember less is more! A couple of repetitions of success and then walk away!
