Tommy

Tommy has been on chemotherapy to fight lymphoma for the last two months, and yesterday was the time to say goodbye to one of the greatest characters I've ever met.

I was meant to euthanase him when he came in as a 'problem cat' around the neighbourhood. He stuck his tiny paw through the cage, grabbed my sleeve through the cage bars and that was it. He became our practice cat. Tommy played a mean game of soccer and gave dogs multiple lessons in how to behave around cats.

Tommy saved countless lives. He gave blood to so many cats with severe tick bite fever, and he would steal chicken through the cage bars from all the animals struggling to start eating. In so many cases, this competition for food encouraged them to take the first bite and sped up their recovery time. He would sit on our clients' laps and be extra cute and purry and was almost catnapped by a few of them who also fell in love with this goofball.

Tommy was an absolute mischief maker and loved his food. He would play catch with us and always made us laugh or smile, especially when we were feeling down about the nature of our work.
Tommy was called Thomas van schalkwyk by Dean. He was a terrible fighter, always getting beaten up in fights, but he never gave up.

Once he disappeared and I was so devastated that I actually called an animal communicator to help us find him.
He returned happily 3 weeks later, feeling quite chuffed with himself.

Tommy, you have no idea how much you will be missed by all of us at the practice. We love you and are so grateful we got to spend these 6 beautiful years with you.
