No commercial vaccine? No problem. šŸ‘šŸ’‰

When a severe outbreak of Vuilbek (Orf virus) threatened a local sheep flock, Dr. Francois created a custom, farm-specific autogenous vaccine using the flock’s own circulating strain to stop the infection in its tracks.

With the freezing weather outside, our pets are spending less time running around the veld and a lot more time curled up by the fireplace.

Less exercise means they burn fewer calories. If we keep filling their bowls to the summer brim, the winter weight start adding up quickly, which puts extra strain on their joints!

Tip: If your dog’s activity level has dropped significantly this July, consider trimming their food portions slightly, or swap out high-calorie treats for healthy alternatives like boiled pumpkin or carrot chunks. Let’s keep them lean and healthy until spring!

A routine check that saved a life! 🩺✨

A sweet older boy came in for a neuter, but Dr. Sarah discovered he was a cryptorchid (only one testicle had dropped).

Swipe to see how finding the hidden, retained testicle early saved him from a dangerous cancerous mass! āž”ļø

The takeaway? Retained testicles stay too warm inside the body, which almost always causes cancer. Neutering saves lives in more ways than one!

A lot of pet owners think that once the winter chill hits the Overberg, ticks vanish. Unfortunately, that’s a myth!

While they do slow down in the cold, ticks don’t die off in winter. They simply hide in leaf litter, long grass, and warm areas. The moment we get a slightly warmer winter afternoon, they wake up hungry.

Because many people stop parasite prevention in July, we often see unexpected cases of tick bite fever (biliary) this time of year.

The rule of thumb: Don’t pause the protection! Keep up with your vet-approved tick and flea treatments all year round to keep your furry family members safe.
