💔 HEARTBREAK AND HEROISM AT THE WELTEVREDEN WASTE SITE 💔

Early this morning, the Brakpan SPCA received a distress call from Sunny's Pet Outreach Team (SPOT) regarding one of the ex-Plastic City dogs who had managed to get her head trapped in a metal skip.

With our Inspector, Mariska, currently confined to a moonboot and crutches, we immediately dispatched John and Mpumi to assess the situation and start rescue efforts. Mpumi called in to report the worst, but they refused to give up. When Inspector Mariska arrived on scene, they had managed to release her from the hole, but she was still trapped inside the massive skip—extremely bewildered, aggressive, and terrified.

Thanks to quick thinking from everyone on site, she was safely secured into a crate and brought back to the Brakpan SPCA.

The Hardest Part of Our Job

Unfortunately, this poor girl sustained severe injuries from being trapped in that metal hole for who knows how long. To prevent further suffering, the heartbreaking decision was made by all parties involved to humanely euthanise her. We are truly sorry for the hard life you had. Rest in peace and run free 🐾🌈

🛠️ A CALL TO ACTION: HELP US HELP THE HEROES 🛠️
During the rescue, two incredible security guards, Dlamini and Zitha, at the Weltevreden Waste Site stepped up without hesitation. They fought so hard with our team to free her that they actually broke their own bolt cutter in the process.

Afterward, they shared their worry that they might get into trouble with their manager for breaking the tool. We want to applaud these men for putting an animal’s life first! That is true compassion.

Can you help us replace their bolt cutter?
We want to get them a replacement immediately to ensure they don't face any consequences for doing the right thing. If you can donate towards a new heavy-duty bolt cutter, please can we ask for help to get a replacement Bolt Cutter??

We need someone who deeply understands the operational needs at a Society level, recognizes the unique responsibilities of our Non-Profit status, and is fully committed to maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare.

🐾 Key Responsibilities & Duties
* Investigate & Action: Investigating public complaints (including anonymous ones) and taking swift, appropriate action.
* Emergencies & Rescues: Reacting immediately to animal emergencies and rescues, including handling after-hours stand-by duties as required.
* Pro-Active Inspections: Carrying out pro-active inspections at establishments where animals are housed, bred, or utilized (such as pet shops, farms, and breeding facilities).
* Education & Public Support: Educating members of the public on correct animal handling and providing assistance on animal-related issues.
* Legal Enforcement: Issuing written warnings and undertaking prosecutions in cases of deliberate abuse, neglect, or cruelty.
* Administration: Keeping all inspectorate-related paperwork, detailed factual reports, and case records completely up to date.

* Community-Driven Mindset: An inspector must always remember that as a non-profit organization, without the support of the public and our valued donors, we cannot do our critical work.

👤 What We Are Looking For

* True Compassion: A deep-seated drive to treat all animals humanely and gently—both on and off duty—while ensuring your own animals at home are cared for correctly.

📋 Job Requirements & Qualifications
* Driver's Licence: Possession of a valid minimum Code B (08) driver’s licence.
* Qualifications: Minimum Matric & Valid NSPCA Inspectors Course Certificate
* Background Check: Strictly no criminal record. Current Police Clearance Certificate is of advantage. (Not older then 3 Months)
* Experience: Previous working experience with animals is highly preferred.
* Computer Literacy: Preferably computer literate to manage mandatory reporting.
* For Trainee Applicants: Willingness to complete a probationary period of no less than 6 consecutive months, Driver's License, PCC, Matric Certificate, pass the entrance examination based on the Operations Manual, pass the Inspectors course, successfully complete portfolio requirements, and meet the Animal Welfare Assistant (AWA) and Large Animal Euthanasia (LAE) training criteria.

💰 Remuneration/Salary will be discussed in person during the interview stage and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗸𝗽𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗝𝗮𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲: 𝗔𝗻 𝗔𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 (𝗦𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗢𝗳) 🚙💨

To anyone who found themselves bumper-to-bumper on Prince George Avenue today around 15:40, muttering curses under your breath and wondering what on earth was causing the holdup...

We have a confession to make. It was us. The Brakpan SPCA strikes again.

Here is the epic tale of why your commute was delayed by a few minutes, and why we aren’t entirely sorry about it.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙎𝙚𝙩𝙪𝙥: 𝙈𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 (𝙄𝙢)𝙥𝙤𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚

The afternoon started normally enough. One of our wonderful committee members was chauffeuring our very own Inspector Mariska back from a doctor’s appointment.
Now, you need to understand the situation with Mariska:
• The Injury: A severely broken foot and torn ligaments.
• The Current Status: Locked down in a massive moonboot and strictly ordered to keep her "foot up" for the last three weeks.
• The Vibe: Times have been incredibly tough, and being sidelined has been an absolute test of patience for her.

But as the universe would have it, fate doesn't care about medical leave.

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩: 𝘼 𝙏𝙬𝙤-𝙁𝙧𝙤𝙣𝙩 𝙒𝙖𝙧

Right there, smack-clack in the middle of the chaotic traffic on Prince George Ave, was a tiny boy. A little four-legged soul, running hopelessly between the cars, completely overwhelmed and in serious danger.

Now, standard protocol for a normal person in a moonboot? Stay in the car.

The Brakpan SPCA protocol? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING STOPS US.

Broken bones? Torn ligaments? A giant clunky medical boot? Please. When an animal is in need, Mariska’s adrenaline kicks in and common medical sense flies out the window.

This left our poor committee member fighting an event of mass proportions on two entirely different fronts:
• Front Line 1: Trying to coax a terrified, fast-moving little dog off a busy main road.
• Front Line 2: Physically wrestling, begging, and commanding a fierce Inspector Mariska to stay in the vehicle before she shattered her foot all over again.

Managing a runaway dog while simultaneously acting as a human seatbelt for a stubborn inspector was a chaotic balancing act that has officially aged our committee member by at least five years. Gray hairs were born today.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘅: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗮𝗱𝗲 🛑

Realizing we needed to end this before anyone (dog or inspector) got hurt, our committee member channeled their inner action-movie driver. They surged ahead, angled the car directly in front of the little fugitive, and blocked the lane.

The little guy looked at the car, looked at us, realized the jig was up, and finally gave up. In a beautiful twist of events, he decided that hitching a ride was much better than running a marathon, and he hopped right into the vehicle.

We quickly pulled into a nearby thoroughfare just to catch our breath, stop shaking, and ensure Mariska hadn't done any accidental stunts on her bad foot. It was only then that we looked back and realized... we had caused an absolute, monstrous traffic jam.

𝑶𝒖𝒓 𝑫𝒆𝒆𝒑𝒆𝒔𝒕 (𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒅𝒆𝒔𝒕) 𝑨𝒑𝒐𝒍𝒐𝒈𝒊𝒆𝒔

"We are truly sorry if you were stuck in that chaos this afternoon. But we hope you can forgive us, knowing that the gridlock was caused by the Brakpan SPCA saving a precious little soul."

Mariska is now back to having her foot safely elevated (under strict supervision this time), our heroic committee member is applying anti-aging cream to recover from the stress, the little boy is safe and sound in our care, and the streets of Brakpan are clear once more.

🚨 IMPORTANT NOTICE: TEMPORARY CLOSURE SATURDAY, 30 MAY 2026 🚨

The Brakpan SPCA office will be closed tomorrow, Saturday 30 May 2026.

We know how frustrating unexpected closures can be, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may cause you. We truly value your support and understanding, but after a grueling, non-stop 48 hours of monitoring Qurbani sites—coupled with being a crucial team member short due to an injury to our inspector, Mariska—our staff is running on empty.

To ensure our team can continue protecting Brakpan's animals with the sharp focus and compassion they deserve, we have to give our exhausted inspectors a brief moment to rest and recharge before the new month begins.
