Dear community,

You may have already noticed the statement issued by the Boksburg SPCA, as well as other branches in Gauteng relating to 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘂𝗸𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮.

Whilst we do not wish to evoke panic we do wish to bring this to cat families attention - especially to those with kittens and unvaccinated adult cats.

Feline panleukopenia is a highly contagious, potentially fatal disease of cats caused by the feline panleukopenia virus .

𝗞𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱.

In lay terms, one could say this is “parvo for cats which like in dogs (puppies) - affects kittens more.”

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘂𝗸𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗮?

🔹Diarrhea.
🔹 Vomiting.
🔹 Fever.
🔹 Depression/lethargy.
🔹 Loss of appetite.
🔹 Dehydration
(may appear as sunken eyes or dry gums)
🔹 Painful belly.

This can be fatal for both cats and kittens.

While it is not contagious for humans or dogs, ferrets can spread the disease to and can obtain the disease from cats.

Panleukopenia is spread through contact with an infected animal's bodily waste, body fluid, bed, or dishes. Pet owners can also carry the disease on their clothing and shoes.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗴 𝗩𝗶𝗲𝘄:

If your cat has any of the above symptoms and you wish to have them treated at our facility please keep your cat carrier in your car and call reception on 0110197600 when you arrive, or if you have someone else in the car kindly let reception know so that we can treat your cat in our isolation consult room.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 :

Panleukopenia viral particles on hard surfaces, such as bowls, carriers, crates, and plastic toys, are readily killed by bleach solutions.

Was seen this morning running in the direction of Brakpan.
Please if anyone sees my black and white pitbull please contact me, last seen in Dalview area Please, if anyone sees him please contact me .. he is scared and will not come to anybody, he has never gone this far away from home

This friendly boy was found at Ebotse entrance Simon street. He has been taken to Rynfield Veterinary Hospital

UPDATE : Owner found 🐶

This Retriever was seen running on the N12 and thankfully went into Airfield.
SPCA Benoni, Gauteng, South Africa managed to secure the Retriever.
