𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸: 𝗩𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗶

Vlooi's owners noticed that she had been gaining weight over the past three months. Looking back, they also recalled that she had been squatting more frequently than usual and passing only small amounts of urine.

Over the weekend, they noticed blood in her urine, prompting her owners to bring her to Rynfield Veterinary Hospital. Upon further investigation several rather large bladder stones were revealed.They were successfully removed and Vlooi is back to her plucky self.

Vlooi's story highlights the importance of paying attention to changes in your pet's normal habits. Even subtle signs can sometimes indicate an underlying condition that requires veterinary attention.

We're happy to report that Vlooi is recovering well, and we wish this girl all the best on her road to recovery. 💖

𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸: 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗿

Thor was brought to us because he was breathing unusually, wasn't acting like himself, and was repeatedly trying to vomit, but nothing was coming up.

He was sedated so that the team could safely take X-rays. These revealed a life-threatening condition called Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus (GDV), where the stomach twists and rapidly fills with gas. GDV is a serious emergency, and every minute counts. Given that Thor is 10 years old, surgery was not considered the best option in his case.

While under sedation, he was intubated and a stomach tube was carefully passed through his mouth into the stomach to release the trapped air. After several attempts, the team successfully decompressed the stomach and relieved the pressure. A conservative treatment that may help is a cold-water stomach wash after deflation.

We are overjoyed that the treatment was successful in this case, and 24 hours later the radiograph showed no further build-up of air. He remained hospitalised overnight for close monitoring and observation.

GDV is a veterinary emergency. If your dog is showing signs such as unsuccessful retching, abdominal swelling, restlessness, or difficulty breathing, seek veterinary attention immediately.

𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸

𝗔 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗗𝗷𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗼

Django, a 1-year-old Staffie, came to Rynfield Veterinary Hospital with severe abdominal pain and an arched back. X-rays showed a large amount of gas in the intestines and the concern was that he had a possible foreign object obstruction.

Django was admitted for pain relief, fluids, close monitoring, and repeat X-rays to assess whether the obstruction was moving or worsening. Thankfully, his discomfort improved overnight and the gas build-up reduced significantly.

As surgery was not an option at the time, Django was sent home for continued monitoring to see how he would recover. The following day, Django passed a piece of cloth in his stool and is now back to his happy, playful self! 🐾

Dogs love to chew anything and everything, but swallowing fabric and other foreign objects can quickly become dangerous. If your pet is vomiting, showing signs of pain or discomfort, lethargic, or not eating, please seek veterinary attention as soon as possible.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗣𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵: 𝗖𝗵𝗹𝗼𝗲

Chloe was rushed to Rynfield Veterinary Hospital after a serious squabble with a dog nearly four times her size.

Upon examination, we discovered bilateral mandibular (lower jaw) fractures. Dr Pieter repaired her jaw using delicate plates and screws, combined with interdental wiring and acrylic splinting, a procedure made possible through proper dental X-rays.

Believe it or not, after being discharged, Chloe was right back at it again. Quite the feisty girl! 🙈 Unfortunately, this led to another surgery to repair the damaged implants.

Despite everything, Chloe was incredibly brave throughout her surgeries and recovery. Once she started taking it easy at home, she healed beautifully and made a full recovery.

Cases like Chloe’s remind us how important prompt veterinary treatment can be after traumatic injuries. We’re grateful to have been part of this brave little lady’s journey back to health. 💖

The McCabe family welcomed their newest little VIP and as you can see, she’s clearly already the crown jewel. 👑

While most of us were enjoying the long weekend after Workers' Day, one of our patients clearly didn’t get the memo…

Tiberius came face-to-face with cows for the very first time. Before anyone knew it, he was out there herding like a pro! 🐄

Natural instincts took over, and off he went like he’d been doing it his whole life.

Dental disease is far more common in pets than most owners realise. It can have a serious impact on your pet’s quality of life.

From chronic pain to difficulty eating, untreated dental issues can quietly affect their everyday lives.

Smaller breeds are especially at risk, often developing dental problems earlier and more frequently than medium or larger dogs.

Goblin came in for his sterilization procedure, but it seems someone in the family had already booked him in for a special manicure before coming to the vet.

The owner’s daughter got hold of his nails over the weekend, and safe to say this handsome little guy arrived in style.

Goblin must have thought, “If I’m going to the vet, I may as well do it in style.” ✨

Hero Pet of the Month: Sissy the Bull Terrier Puppy 🐾

Meet Sissy, our brave little Bull Terrier pup with a heart full of mischief and a spirit that stole ours!

Sissy fractured her right tibia (the lower bone in her back leg) after a daring leap from the bed. Thankfully, due to the minimal displacement of the fracture, we decided that surgery wasn’t necessary. Instead, we opted for external support using a Robert Jones bandage with a splint — a soft, padded alternative to plaster that aids healing.

However, Sissy had other plans! A busy girl with lots of energy, she quickly became a master at removing her bandages in record time. It became clear we needed a new approach — so we admitted her for hospital care with calming medication and a protective cone.

Sissy spent four weeks with us, and during that time, she won over every member of our team. Her courage, cheeky charm, and loving nature made her a favourite in the hospital.

When the day finally arrived for her to go home, she was absolutely thrilled — tail wagging, eyes sparkling, and ready to take on the world once more.

Go well, sweet Sissy! Stay happy, stay curious, and keep being your joyful, bouncy self. 💖🐶
