But did you know that true black Arabians are among the rarest of them all—less than 2% of purebred Arabians are black! That’s why they’re called “𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗣𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹" of the desert 💎

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐒𝐨 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥?
In ancient times, black horses were symbols of mystery, power, and good fortune. The Prophet Mohammed’s favorite mare was said to be black and led the charge in the first battle of Islam. These majestic horses were so rare, they were often reserved for royalty and chiefs!

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐀𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐧?
Not all black coats are created equal! A true black Arabian must be 𝗯𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲. To be considered truly black: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦’𝘴 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘵—𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘶𝘻𝘻𝘭𝘦, 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘴—𝘮𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦 𝘣𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 (𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴).

🧬 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝟏𝟎𝟏:
To be black, a horse must:
• Carry the black pigment gene (E).

Not carry the gene that restricts black to just the mane and tail (aa at the Agouti locus).

𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤?
Yes! That’s a homozygous black horse (EE) genes – it will always pass on the black gene to its foals and will never produce a chestnut!

That’s the golden ticket for breeders chasing consistent black offspring. There’s now a DNA test to confirm this gene combo — no more guessing games!

🖤 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐁𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤?
Yes! There’s jet black, raven black, blue-black, and summer black — and foals are often born a strange “mousey” color that darkens over time (up to 4 years!). Some may fade slightly in the sun, but the rarest blue-black types don’t fade much at all.

🇪🇬 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦?
Many black Arabians trace their roots back to Egyptian bloodlines like the famous Babson line. Horses like Fa-Serr and Negem helped build today’s beautiful black breeding programs.

Arabians have a very distinctive body type that gives them a major edge in endurance:

• Short, strong backs for efficient movement

• Deep chests for big lung capacity = better oxygen flow

• Fine skin and thin coats to help cool down fast

• Strong legs with dense bone and hard hooves for durability over any terrain

They’re compact, athletic, and balanced—basically, Mother Nature’s ultimate long-distance athlete.
