Polly is a 3 yr old Great Dane with a big heart and an even bigger personality. While she was surrendered to the shelter as part of a breeder surrender along with several other Danes, Polly already knew that the good life includes soft couches and loving people and she’s fully on board with both.

A bit of a self-proclaimed princess, Polly would happily spend her days lounging beside her humans, soaking up affection and offering her own brand of sweet companionship. She’s full of personality (and definitely has opinions she’s not afraid to share), which only adds to her charm.

Polly can be a little timid when faced with new situations, but with the help of her wonderful temporary foster family, she’s already making big strides and growing more confident every day. With patience, love, and a steady routine, this gentle girl will continue to blossom into the amazing companion we know she can be.

Excessive and excited barking can be a bit addicting, since adrenaline is released.

Adrenaline is a hormone responsible for the fight-or-flight response in the body. It increases the blood flow to the muscles and brain, increases the blood sugar level, and also makes the heart beat faster.

It's usually triggered by fear, excitement and stress.

Help your dog not practice the adrenaline rush by:

✴️Reduce excessive exercise to lower adrenaline in the bloodstream.
✴️Take sniffing walks which provide mental stimulation, yet can be calming.
✴️Teach your dog to greet visitors. Use a leash to manage your dog.
✴️If you live in a noisy part of town, block out noise with a brown noise machine.
✴️Remain calm if your dog begins barking. Yelling "Quiet" only adds to the excitement!
✴️Limit access to doors and windows if your dog is fearful or territorial.
✴️Add snuffle mats, frozen stuffed food toys and licki mats, and more human companionship to ward off boredom.
✴️Wait for a second or two of quiet before petting your dog when returning home. Shape longer durations of quietness over time!
✴️Consult a vet behaviorist and/or certified behavior consultant if your dog compulsively barks.

Do you need a loyal home office buddy? Someone to remind you to take breaks, grab a snack, and soak up a little sunshine? Archer is your guy!

This sweet boy is 50% Saint Bernard + 50% Border Collie = 100% heart. Approximately 80 lbs. He’s the perfect blend of playful energy and laid-back couch companion ... just as happy joining you for a walk as he is settling in for a Netflix binge.

Archer absolutely adores his people and prefers to keep them within sight or even better, within paw’s reach. He forms strong bonds and thrives on companionship.

He would do well with a calm dog sibling his size or larger, so they can chill around the house together and have playtime outside. But he’d also be perfectly happy as an only dog where he can soak up all the love and treats for himself.

With his Border Collie smarts and Saint Bernard eagerness to please, Archer is a quick learner.... especially when food is involved! Because of his past as a stray, he does experience some separation anxiety. His fosters have already seen great progress, and with a patient, understanding family, he’ll continue to gain confidence and learn that his people always come back. A calm canine companion may help him adjust, too.

Archer loves being outdoors, walks nicely on leash (though he may try to herd the occasional squirrel!), and enjoys a good mix of playtime and relaxation. When it’s time to unwind, you’ll find him happily stretched out on a cool floor right by your feet.

If you’re looking for a devoted, smart, and loving companion, Archer is ready to be your shadow and your best friend.

The best choices? They last about two seconds.
Blink and they're over.
Worse still we miss them or dismiss them as "nothing".

They were going to rush through the door.
But paused.

They were watching something across the road.
Then looked back at you.

They were pacing around the house.
Then stopped, lay down and settled.

They were excited and jumping out of their skin to greet someone.
But those four paws stayed exactly where they were, on the ground.

Nothing dramatic happened. Except it did!
It really did.

There was no asking for it.
No big training moment.
Nobody necessarily even noticed.
But your dog just made a choice.
And a brilliant one at that.

And those tiny choices they make can be incredibly telling, especially if you've been working on some behaviour that isn't wanted.
Well guess what?
They just gave you the behaviour you’ve been looking for.
And it’s so easy to miss.

That spontaneous glance back at you?
Absolutely worth noticing.
The pause before rushing forward?
Worth noticing.
Choosing to settle when they could have carried on?
Yup, just look at what they did!

Oh that's some rewardable stuff right there, in action.

When something great happens naturally and we reinforce it, we can make that behaviour more likely to happen again, and again, and again.

And eventually those little tiny, easily missed choices can become choices your dog makes more often.
Not because you told them what to do.

And THAT is the "secret sauce" in action right there.

Meet Fozzie — your future fluffy best friend!

Just like his Muppet namesake, this 4yr old Newfoundland is full of charm, fun, and lovable goofiness. Fozzie is the perfect mix of playful and couch potato ... always ready for some fun with his people or playtime with other similarly sized dogs, but equally happy to flop beside you for snuggles and relaxation.

Sweet, affectionate, and convinced he’s a lap dog, Fozzie brings laughter and love everywhere he goes. He’s basically a living teddy bear with a playful streak and a heart as big as his paws.

Fozzie would make a wonderful therapy dog. He gently leans into everyone he meets.

If your home is missing laughter, love, and a giant fluffy sidekick, Fozzie is ready to take the stage. Waka! Waka!

Unfortunately Fozzie contracted heartworms prior to coming into the rescue. He will need a foster to adopt family willing to see him through the remainder of his current treatment regimen for the nasty parasites. We pay for his necessary vet care including heartworm treatment and heartworm testing at an LFAR contracted vet while being fostered.

As is in our basic requirements, your dogs MUST consistently be on heartworm prevention.

Once Fozzie has completed his treatment and is deemed free of heartworms, then if all parties are agreeable that it’s a good fit, his foster to adopt family can adopt him.

🐱Good with dog savvy cats as she would happily make them a playmate, not in a hurtful way, but as a friend which most cats don't appreciate. She was respectful when one cat popped her in the face, she took the queue and walked away.

Calista is a sweet, silly girl. She a mix of puppy energy still but happy to chill out with you once she gets some play time. She can be a little shy at first but warms up quickly and is an absolute love bug.

Calista was picked up as a stray not once but twice therefore a PHYSICALLY fenced yard is REQUIRED for her safety. We have NO history on Calista because she was a stray.

Calista tested a very light heartworm positive in the shelter. When rechecked at our vet, she tested heartworm negative. To double check, we sent out to a third party for testing with inconclusive results. After discussion with several veterinarians, we have decided to continue her slow kill heartworm treatment and will retest in 90 days to hopefully get a real diagnosis.

Calista will need a foster to adopt family willing to continue with her treatment for the 90 days until retest and if she is negative she can be adopted. If she is heartworm positive they will need to see her through the remainder of her current treatment regimen for the nasty parasites. We pay for her necessary vet care including heartworm treatment and heartworm testing at an LFAR contracted vet while being fostered.

Why would a dog stop?
They did something that worked, and it worked well!

There can be a specific cycle or pattern for many fear reactive dogs.

A dog spots something they're concerned about.

Their tension rises.

They bark. Lunge. Growl. Maybe they freeze on the spot or desperately try to get away.

And then?

The other dog walks past.
The person disappears around the corner.
The bike keeps going.

Their person turns around and moves them away.

Suddenly there's distance.

And with that distance comes relief.

From the dog's perspective, something incredibly important just happened.

That doesn't mean they're deliberately thinking, “Excellent, barking made that dog disappear. I'll do that again next Tuesday.”

But behaviour has consequences, and those consequences matter.

If reacting is repeatedly followed by the thing they're frightened of becoming further away? Well, that response can become very well practiced.

And sometimes it starts much earlier.

The dog who once reacted at five metres may begin reacting at ten.
The dog who waited until another dog was close may start responding the moment one appears.

This is also why simply giving a fearful dog lots and lots of exposure doesn't necessarily teach them that everything is okay.

If every encounter gives them another opportunity to practice that same old cycle, we're getting not much more than repetition.

Repetition can form some incredibly strong habits

When your dog is anxious, what’s their “go-to response?” Barking, lunging, freezing, retreating or something completely different?
