Football’s coming home, let’s make sure our dogs feel safe at home too ⚽

To us, the World Cup is fun and celebratory, but for our dogs it can be a stressful time. Try these tips to help make football celebrations easier and more comfortable for them.

[Visual description: A graphic with the title "Football’s coming home, Let’s make sure our dogs feel safe at home too." and tips that can help your dog feel safer during football celebrations: like avoiding celebrating right beside your dog so they don’t get startled, asking unfamiliar guests to greet calmly and give space, providing access to a quieter place away from guests for your dog to escape to when needed, like an area with their bed, toys and water further from the excitement and being mindful of choking risks when handling BBQ's around dogs.]

Polly is a 3 yr old Great Dane with a big heart and an even bigger personality. While she was surrendered to the shelter as part of a breeder surrender along with several other Danes, Polly already knew that the good life includes soft couches and loving people and she’s fully on board with both.

A bit of a self-proclaimed princess, Polly would happily spend her days lounging beside her humans, soaking up affection and offering her own brand of sweet companionship. She’s full of personality (and definitely has opinions she’s not afraid to share), which only adds to her charm.

Polly can be a little timid when faced with new situations, but with the help of her wonderful temporary foster family, she’s already making big strides and growing more confident every day. With patience, love, and a steady routine, this gentle girl will continue to blossom into the amazing companion we know she can be.

Polly is spayed & UTD on vet care, vaccines and preventatives. She is currently being fostered in the Nashville TN area. We adopt NATIONWIDE. Out of respect for our foster family's time and privacy, we do NOT arrange meet and greet without an approved application on file. If you’re interested in adopting Polly, you can view our requirements, age based adoption fees and fill out an adoption application at https://www.luckyfarmsrescue.org/adoption

Do you need a loyal home office buddy? Someone to remind you to take breaks, grab a snack, and soak up a little sunshine? Archer is your guy!

This sweet boy is 50% Saint Bernard + 50% Border Collie = 100% heart. Approximately 80 lbs. He’s the perfect blend of playful energy and laid-back couch companion ... just as happy joining you for a walk as he is settling in for a Netflix binge.

Archer absolutely adores his people and prefers to keep them within sight or even better, within paw’s reach. He forms strong bonds and thrives on companionship.

He would do well with a calm dog sibling his size or larger, but he’d also be perfectly happy as an only dog where he can soak up all the love and treats for himself.

With his Border Collie smarts and Saint Bernard eagerness to please, Archer is a quick learner.... especially when food is involved! Because of his past as a stray, he does experience some separation anxiety. His fosters have already seen great progress, and with a patient, understanding family, he’ll continue to gain confidence and learn that his people always come back. A calm canine companion may help him adjust, too.

Archer loves being outdoors, walks nicely on leash (though he may try to herd the occasional squirrel!), and enjoys a good mix of playtime and relaxation. When it’s time to unwind, you’ll find him happily stretched out on a cool floor right by your feet.

If you’re looking for a devoted, smart, and loving companion, Archer is ready to be your shadow and your best friend.

Archer is neutered & UTD on vet care, vaccines and preventatives. He is currently being fostered in the Atlanta GA area. We adopt NATIONWIDE but require adopters in most cases to travel to the foster home with their current dog/dogs (to ensure they will be friends) to pick up. Out of respect for our foster family's time and privacy, we do NOT arrange meet and greet without an approved application on file. His adoption fee is $300. If you’re interested in adopting Archer, you can view our requirements and fill out an adoption application at https://www.luckyfarmsrescue.org/adoption

Socialisation is a term that many struggle to define.
It's often confused with play, but play is a completely separate and important skill.
In a world that pushes constant interaction ….where dogs are expected to greet and play with every other dog they see, we can unintentionally create a dog who views every other dog as a source of excitement.
This isn’t socialisation… and it never was.

A better way to think about socialisation is acclimation, helping your dog adjust to everything the world offers, not just other dogs.

Weather
Surfaces
Animals
Crowds of people, all ethnicities, ages, and movement styles
Noises
Scents

That’s just a taste of what true socialisation really is.

Acceptance is another way to view it.
Accepting, not reacting.
Building positive associations.

That is true socialisation.

Improvement does not occur in the presence of constant overwhelm. Dogs can't learn how to cope if they are busy trying to avoid the things that are scary. The avoidance will be the way that they learn to copy.

Busy neighborhoods are rich in triggers: unpredictable movement, proximity to unfamiliar dogs and people, noise, and limited ability to create distance. For a reactive patient, this results in repeated activation of the stress response.

When a dog is consistently over threshold:

▶️Sympathetic arousal increases
▶️Cognitive function is impaired so your dog can't learn the behaviors that you are trying to teach
▶️Defensive behaviors are reinforced through repetition without you doing anything except continuing to walk your dog

This is not exposure therapy nor is it desensitization. It is training your dog to BE REACTIVE.

Each reaction strengthens neural pathways associated with threat detection and response. Over time, the behavior becomes more efficient, more intense, and more easily triggered.

Progress happens where the brain is able to process and learn—not where it is in survival mode. If we want different behavior, we have to change the conditions in which behavior occurs.
