A great week at work, a sad week for us personally.

WORK
I’ve started working with some amazing new clients and celebrated some exciting successes across the board with my on-going clients.
A number of milestones were conquered on the separation training front, puppy training clients are having a blast with training (that’s what it’s all about) and I had some wonderful discovery calls with new floofsters and their humans who I’m very much looking forward to be working with soon.

PERSONALLY
Unfortunately we had some bad (dog) health news this week. As a result, Wolfgang is resigning from her position as head honcho at Wolfgang’s Way Dog Training and will spend her last months in the lap of pure doggy luxury.

WORK
After a moment of deep contemplation, Wolfgang has decided to appoint me (Alex, the human) as the new head honcho. And I would like to assure y’all that I’m taking this role very seriously and that I will do my very best to reach the dizzying heights of professionalism that you’ve grown accustomed to while this business was under the leadership of Lady Wolfgang.

💚🐕💚 We wish you all a wonderful weekend and don’t forget to love your doggos, from wherever you are to the end of the world (and around the universe, and back).

Manse’s story is both educational and inspiring.

We are still in the midst of it, figuring out how his medical needs can be met, but it’s a BIG first step for his human who very much insisted on finding out what’s going on and getting him the help he needs.

Not only so he can succeed at separation anxiety training but also to ensure he lives a happy and healthy life.

Living with a dog who has anxieties, including the fear of being home alone, isn’t easy.

I get it, I’ve been there myself.

Lovis’ (hu)mum has even been told several times that her dog will never get over it.

💪 And here they are, working on getting her comfortable home alone, and succeeding.

No doubt, there is still a long road ahead of them and no doubt, they will face this challenge together.
With her human now trusting her newly acquired knowledge how to help her fur friend to get over the finish line.

💚 I’m excited to watch them taking every milestones they’ve set for themselves.

EASY-WINS are the secret sauce for separation anxiety training success.

It works well for all of my clients, and it was a crucial ingredient for my own dog’s separation training plan back then.

And I don’t only use easy-wins if and when a dog struggles with their absence training journey.

Those shorter durations are also needed once you reach a longer target duration - from 30 minutes and up.

Why? To make it more ‘real life’.

Once you are at durations of one hour and more, I generally advise to practice these only a couple of times per week to begin with, to avoid over-whelming your dog.

Most of us want to hang out with their furry buddies 24/7, I get it!

But often, our dogs don’t enjoy these ‘pet-friendly’ public spaces, such as cafes and restaurants, as much as we think they do.

And for those of you, who have a dog who struggles with separation related issues, it’s double-tricky. As you often HAVE to take your dog wherever you go (especially if it’s a last minute situation).

And you end up falling into a routine, where taking your dog with you becomes the norm and you feel you’ll be ok to just manage forever.

And I get it, I was there myself with my little Wolfgang. And aside from her separation anxiety, I LOVE hanging out with her.

But of course this wasn’t sustainable, and in the end I had to tackle it, help her overcome her fear of being home alone.

I also realised that she actually wasn’t as comfortable to tag along anymore, especially as she got holder.

Luckily, we are now in a good place, where I can allow her to choose whether she’s up for a public outing or not.

Teaching your puppy to be calm and confident when home alone should be part of your early socialisation efforts.

That way you can truly take your time and work at your pup’s pace.

After all, every puppy is different. Some puppies find it easy, some puppies start for cry and bark the second you step out of sight.
