🐾 VetCam 2026 – what a week!

Earlier this week, we welcomed a fantastic group of prospective students to the Vet School in Cambridge for our annual VetCam residential - giving them a real insight into life as a veterinary student.

From hands-on demos and museum visits to exploring the colleges and meeting our brilliant staff and student ambassadors, it’s been a busy, inspiring few days.

The feedback says it all…
💬 “A complete insight into the veterinary course at Cambridge.”
💬 “Well organised and very interactive.”
💬 “The demos were fun and fascinating.”

A huge thank you to everyone who made it happen - and to all the students who joined us and brought such enthusiasm and curiosity.

📢 Calling all veterinary professionals - we need your help.

The veterinary landscape is changing fast, and to ensure the next generation of vets is ready for the real world, we need the perspective of those living it every day.

We are currently conducting a comprehensive review of the our Veterinary Curriculum to ensure it meets the demands of modern practice.

By taking some time to share your views, you’ll be helping us continue to deliver a course that continues to produce capable, confident vets equipped to meet the needs of practices now and in the future. The survey takes approximately 30 minutes and is completely anonymous. We really appreciate you taking the time to help.

If you have specific suggestions or would like to discuss the curriculum review further, please feel free to reach out to [email protected]. Thank you for your time.

What an incredible week it’s been! 🎉

As part of the Cambridge Festival 2026, the Department of Veterinary Medicine welcomed over 750 people across a packed programme of events - making this our biggest and most successful festival yet.

From a buzzing Open Day with more than 500 visitors, to welcoming over 180 school pupils for hands-on workshops (including learning how to bandage a horse and even x-ray a snake), it’s been fantastic to see so many people engaging with veterinary science.

We also hosted a sold-out live podcast event, bringing together experts and audiences for a fascinating discussion on heart disease across human and veterinary medicine.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, supported us, and helped make the week such a success - we loved welcoming you to the Vet School 🐾

We’re already looking forward to doing it all again next year!

📢 This Is Bigger Than One Vet School. This Is About Access. 🐾

Veterinary medicine is one of the longest and most financially demanding degrees in the UK.

• 5–6 years of study
• Compulsory placements... often unpaid
• Limited ability to work part-time
• High living costs in university cities
• Graduating with significant debt

For students without family financial support, the barriers are enormous.

Cambridge Vet School has been a crucial route for social mobility, offering substantial bursaries, widening participation programmes, and real support for first-generation and lower-income students. It has provided thousands of pounds in financial assistance to those who need it most.

If this course closes, we don’t just lose a department.

We lose:
🔹 Opportunity for talented students from ordinary backgrounds
🔹 Diversity within the veterinary profession
🔹 Role models for future generations
🔹 A pathway that has actively worked to reduce inequality

Veterinary medicine already struggles with representation and accessibility. Removing one of the institutions actively trying to change that sends a powerful and worrying message.

This powerful article explains exactly why Cambridge Vet School matters so deeply for social mobility. Please take a few minutes to read and share:

This isn’t just about today’s students.
It’s about who gets to become a vet tomorrow.

Cambridge’s vets are fighting tooth and nail...

In a powerful piece for Varsity, Frida Bradbrook highlights the growing anger, fear and heartbreak surrounding the potential closure of the University of Cambridge’s Veterinary School. Students, staff and alumni have spoken out about what this school truly represents... not just to Cambridge, but to veterinary medicine across the UK and beyond.

The article makes clear that there is no shortage of people willing to fight for the school. Cambridge is widely regarded as home to some of the profession’s best educators, producing vets who are clinically excellent, research-driven and deeply committed to animal welfare. The school’s integrated approach - combining medical, scientific and practical training, is described as irreplaceable.

Concerns are also raised about the wider consequences of closure: the loss of world-leading veterinary research, the impact on future pandemics and public health, and the damage done to animal care, food security and medical innovation.

This is not just about a building or a course... it’s about protecting a centre of excellence that shapes the future of veterinary medicine.

Thank you to Frida Bradbrook for shedding light on the voices of those who refuse to let this happen quietly.

🐾 The fight to save the vet school continues.

I have been a client of the Cambridge University Vet School for the past 17 years. I have found the service of the Small Animal, Equine and Large Animal departments to be invaluable. In Spring of 2008 I contacted the Vets I was registered with at the time because a ewe of mine who was lambing was in great difficulties and I was struggling to get the first lamb out. I was told that a vet wouldn’t be able to get over to me for 3 or 4 days. After pleading and getting nowhere I rang a friend in desperation who said “ring the University Vet School”. Within 15 minutes a vet from the University arrived and after a worthy effort retrieved 2 healthy lambs. The ewe and lambs all lived well into their teens.

Since that day I have found their compassion, dedication and expertise go far beyond expectations and it’s clear how deeply they care about both their patients and the people who love them. It is also wonderful to see the next generation of bright vet students putting their learnt knowledge into practice out in the field. Getting to experience challenging, and at times rare, situations and learn how to overcome them and gain knowledge for the future from them. What a devasting loss it would be to the profession if this was to cease.

It has given me great piece of mind knowing that the research gained from my Spaniel’s rare Cancer could help future pets and humans as there is limited knowledge in either species. After my pet pigs succumbed to old age their skeletons have been kept and used for teaching purposes and currently my Spaniel Buddy’s heart scans are providing data for his rare tricuspid valve dysplasia.

Currently my two Shetland ponies Lulu and Lucky are under the care of the Large Animal Department. Kate listened to my concerns trusting I knew my animals and something was wrong. Very quickly it was discovered that both Lulu and Lucky have been suffering from iron poisoning and in addition Lulu has Liver disease. Lulu went down hill very fast and if it hadn’t been for the expertise of the Vet School Lulu wouldn’t be with me today. My pets are my family. From the chickens through to Lulu and Lucky. The Vet School has been 100% by my side in ensuring they live happy healthy lives and I pray this continues.
