And it’s official. 🪰

We are doing our best to minimize risk and keep the fly population down using POP fly bait/traps, cleaning out livestock trays and pens, inspecting animals, and even using spray. We are also armed with our farm first aid kit in case trouble comes our way. Keep a sharp eye on your pets and livestock!

New World screwworm has been detected in El Paso County, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

New World screwworm flies lay eggs in wounds or openings in living tissue. After hatching, the larvae feed on living tissue and can cause serious injury or death.

Most of the action happened on the other side of the mountains and to the north of us in New Mexico. Nothing exciting to report from here! 😎

Heavy rain and weather poured over the Borderland Friday evening. Severe storms could continue throughout the weekend.

Spring is usually Windy Season, with a shorter “mini” windy season in the fall. So we’re used to pretty blustery and often dusty days! This most recent system hit pretty hard though. The place we visit for u-pick cherries lost a cherry tree that was planted in 1945. Some friends of ours had all three trees in their front yard blow down. A local horse rescue lost the roof off their chicken coop. Some people called it an early weekend because the drive to work/school was too risky. It sure was a doozy!

Our little farmstead withstood the storm fairly well. Roofs intact, trees standing, and minimal plant casualties. The pumpkin growing so nicely on the trellis looks pretty beat up, and we lost a chunk of our pecan harvest, but very grateful it wasn’t worse 🙏

Cool. 10:24 and Power’s back. For now…
We’re definitely losing pecans though.

9:42pm and the wind already knocked the power out
