Phoenix is getting better!

What a difference 2 weeks of love and care makes. She has gained 8 pounds on a slow refeeding program and her skin is starting to improve.

Phoenix has a little pep in her step now and her eyes are bo longer sunken in. Her gums are a better shade of pink too.

Because she’s so frail she doesn’t do a lot but sleep and eat but now that she has learned to walk on a leash she enjoys a short walk. She has started to seek attention and her very sweet cuddly side is shining through. The horrible diarrhea she came with has resolved with treatment, and her appetite is ravenous. We continue to use a slow refeeding program. Dogs this emaciated are sometimes already in organ failure and it’s critical to go slow as rapid feeding can actually overwhelm their system and be fatal. Honestly she would have been dead within days had she not been rescued when she was. And while it’s to soon to say if she has any organ damage, we are breathing a little easier.

This emaciated Doberman was seen occasionally in a rural area for approximately 3 months but was too afraid to be caught. She became so emaciated and weak that she began approaching humans a little closer and someone took photos and made a post. Rescue angels went looking but she was gone. One finally located her but still couldn’t get her. Ketrina went back at 3:30am, when all was quiet and set a trap. Finally she went in.

She weighed just 30 pounds on arrival, probably 20 pounds underweight, and is being treated for mange, diarrhea, malnutrition etc. She was finally strong enough for a medicated bath and she did well. We’re guessing her at around a year of age and are working closely with our vets to help her.

Pinyon, the Spotted Skunk we flew from Sierra Wildlife Rescue to San Diego Humane Society was released to the wild with his new companions.

A group of rare western spotted skunks was rehabilitated at San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center and released into a remote area in California.

An update on the emaciated Dobie we flew from Visalia. She's now named Phoenix and is ever so slowly and carefully getting better...
