Dog socialization needs to start with exposure to new environments, sights, and sounds. You want to build experiences together with your dogs, training and teaching them through these things to build confidence.
❗️❗️Then you can slowly start to expose them to family dogs or dogs you know are neutral to help build exposure to being around dogs. ❗️❗️This DOES NOT MEAN DOGS HAVE TO PLAY TO SOCIALIZE. Simply being around dogs and not having any behaviors is GREAT exposure.

This dog went from anxious and reactive at the start of the session to working around another dog by the end. Foundational obedience had been built, and now we begin to teach the owner how to dismantle the reactivity and teach replacement behaviors through praise and reward.

It's a hard truth, but this tells us we need to start working on foundational obedience on order to create a communication and level of understanding between you and your dog.
Your dog being able to hold a command until you release them is an exercise of thresholds. Why is this important? Sometimes it's safety, sometimes it's to wait, sometimes it's simply because you said so.

It's all in your body language and leash pressure. Notice how my client's leg is in the first video versus the final clip. The way you move communications something to your dog. We want to move our body to guide and show your dog what we want them to do when teaching a new behavior. We do not want to move to meet your dog.

Dog owners, the secret in training the place commands lies in duration, distraction, and distance.
What does this mean? With dog training, these three D's need to be practiced to get any skill to stick.
So as you teach the place command you will increase the distance using your leash, increase distractions, using food toys, people, environments, and adding duration, meaning increasing the amount the time you dog can successfully hold the place command.

Muzzled dogs are keeping themselves safe. This is her first time in public after extensive training. In an effort to keep herself safe from a number of dogs around, she is wearing a muzzle.
This was a fundraiser event for the rescue she is a part of, but in a public environment, we can't always guarantee that everyone else will keep their dogs a respectable distance.
In my other unpopular opinion, no dogs should ever be meeting nose to nose, but like I said, not everyone follows this rule.
Needless to say, my muzzled client was the best behaved dog there because she has nailed her foundational obedience!
