(339)

We offer boarding services, riding lessons, and events on our 600 acre farm just 20 minutes north of downtown Chattanooga. We are dedicated to growing a community of riders that value safety; responsibility; solid riding skills; natural, leadership-based human-horse interaction; and the beauty, freedom, and fun of both horses and the outdoors. We also enjoy natural living and sustainable farming a

s a way of life, and produce our own weed-free fescue/mixed grass hay; sell summer produce from our vegetable gardens; and sell fresh eggs from our free range hens.

Week one of horse camp 2026 is done! We had a lovely group of kids and instructors this week!

Many of the camps are filled up, but we still have room next week for a couple Horsemanship 1 and Horsemanship 2 riders! You can book at our website, www.hiddenhillsfarm.com.

The weather has made planning difficult, but we think we are going to go ahead and host our regularly scheduled (but not posted as an event) Play Day tomorrow! Plan for muddy conditions—and maybe some new little piggies (Daisy is about to pop)! If the weather changes and we decide to cancel, we’ll post here on FB.

And thanks to our new instructor Faith for these fabulous pix of favorite pony Lily!

We are looking for a part time milkhand, in particular for Saturdays and Sundays!

The job involves milking the cows with a machine, cleaning the milking parlor, processing the milk, and cleaning the equipment. We usually milk around 10am each day, and the whole process takes about 4 hours/day right now. The start time can be somewhat flexible, and a few other farm chores/animal care can be added if desired and as needed.

Candidates must be reliable, trustworthy, comfortable handling large animals in a firm but kind way, able to carry heavy pails of milk, work outdoors in various weather conditions, and pay careful attention to cleanliness.

Please text Tara at 423-488-3993 if you are interested!

Renn and Jenna, two of our Junior Instructors, made it to IEA (Interscholastic Equestrian Association) dressage finals last weekend at St. Louis with their team, Dream Big Equestrian. These two have been riding together since they were pipsqueaks, making the ponies mind. It was so fun so watch them succeed, helping their team win 6th place overall out of 12 teams!

This picture is probably of most interest to those who are members of our raw milk herd share program. We make butter about every two weeks. After the butter making process, whatever is left over we place in a dish in the refrigerator for our own home personal use. You will notice in this photo what two weeks of cows grazing on the new spring grasses does to the color of the butter versus cows that are strictly on our winter Hay diet. The white side of the dish is butter, made from cow strictly on the winter hay diet. The yellow side of the dish is butter, made from cream after only two weeks of being on the new summer pastures. No coloring agents, only cream and salt. Quite a striking difference.

Hay season has officially begun for Hidden Hills Farm. Usually, we do not start hay until the first week of May but with the weather as it has been, this is close enough. Our first field was a bit light, but not without it treasures. Each year we will find at least a couple sets of antlers or a picked over deer carcass on the first cutting. On second cutting usually late June early July we often find fawns hidden in the deep grass or turkeys sitting on nests but Tara‘s favorite find early July are the blackberries.

When we moved to the new farm on Pine Hill Road one of the first things we noticed was there is a resident Chuck- Will’s widow here. Our new location is just 2 miles from the Edgeman property and yet we never remember hearing a Chuck Will’s widow in all of our recollections there. These small birds nest here at the same location on our farm here in Tennessee and then late summer make the several thousand mile trip to their winter home in South America. In our first year here we soon found that we were not only hearing a Chuck Will‘s widow on the east side of the property, but there was also a whipper-will on the west side of the property. It is easy to confuse the two unless you know what you are listening for. We have been hearing the Whipperwill for about a month now, but not the Chuck Will‘s widow until last night. Our fear was perhaps it did not survive the trip this year or perhaps something had happened to it during it during its Stay in South America over the winter. I have provided two pictures from the Internet of each of the birds. They look a lot alike, but you can see the difference in their faces.

If you’re interested in hearing both birds some evening after 10 PM drop us a line and will show you where to park so you can enjoy them as well.

For those who come to the farm Angus is no stranger. This gentle giant is a favorite for lessons and is our “go to guy” for trail rides and beginner riders. He is an American Draft horse, one of several draft style horses we have in our program. He is such a popular guy we try to not wear him out, which is why he is not usually part of the play day pony ride lineup. However, for those coming to play day tomorrow you might see him in the pasture on your hayride or in the barn getting prepped for afternoon lessons. Someone found out that his favorite food was donuts, but unfortunately, he doesn’t share.
