Happy 5th Birthday to my funny, charming, derpy, happy, screaming, sensitive, dramatic noodle. On her best days we run around the alpine lakes and sleep in tents. On her worst days, we trim nails ☠️

From our first week together, when she ran down the road to join a neighbour's birthday party and shoved her face into cake, to her birthday just last year when she found a confident marmot to start a screaming match with, I am so grateful that this ginger insanity fell into my lap.

My most vivid memories of Bourbon⤵️

😮her very healthy vocal cords screaming on the plane home from .vizslas making the entire plane laugh during takeoff instructions
🤦‍♀️regularly spending half an hour at 11pm trying to find Bourbon in the neighbourhood after she would go out for her last p*e and not return
😬hearing she started her first heat on Ben's lap ( sorry!)
😮an 8 day backcountry trip when she just wouldn't rest. She ran the entirety of the days in mountains and I still had to walk her the next day we got home
😫siccing a racoon on Whiskey the evening before a big camping trip
🤦‍♀️hiding in a tunnel during our first agility competition
🤦‍♀️turning up on the "lost dogs" section of facebook after I went off on vacation
😮tracked over 1.4km away from me before dawn on a snowy mountain hike
🤮barffing up a gallon of raw rotten salmon under my desk as I was working
☺️charming everyone she meets
😬screaming so loudly when I do her nails that neighbours come around to make sure "she wasn't being attacked or trapped"
❤️making me laugh everyday no matter what is happening in the real world

Never did I think I would be hiking big peaks with an 11 year old Whiskey. This last trip had proper scrambles I would hesitate to bring most people. Over the years I've seen some amazing senior pups on mountains but just didn't expect us to be this lucky. Peep a mountain goat Whiskey way way on the cliff in the last video.

We've been on Instagram for a decade and I've become attached to so many dogs here. Everyday I'm put to tears with more stories about cancers, aging backs and degenerative issues than cheering the lucky few still going strong. We've had our setbacks, but she still looks so happy to hike. After a big day I definitely see some signs of stiffness in Whiskey and hesitancy on big technical moves so I've adjusted my approach a bit. Here's what's helped so far:

📝Rest days, no more 9 hour hikes day after day after day
📝More backpacking trips where I'm carrying 50lbs+ weight and we are all moving slower
📝Harness to help lift on big steps, helping to get into the car
📝More water stops, being careful about sensitivity to heat and cold
📝Watching carefully how Whiskey gets up after a big hike. The first several steps are really telling and the stiffness/pain can set in 2 days afterwards
📝Always moving on rest days, short walks to shake it out
📝Stretches (tail pulls) and back massages to work out the knots (I can see the spasms and work out the knots up to 3 days after)
📝Supplements for joints, anti-inflammatory, and immune system, cartrophen injections, regular chiro visits, blood tests, paw wax
📝Being grateful for everyday and willing to turn back, go slower, and adjust plans

my Utah itinerary

About 1.5 weeks, difficulty listed, still so much I haven't done but so many of you asked. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit with milder temperatures. Some is out of reception needing knowledge of deep sand driving as well as some basic scrambling skills. Pack everything out and keep it beautiful and dog friendly please!

I grew up without traditions from immigrant parents that tried hard to assimilate by leaving behind their own customs. We didn't really celebrate the Lunar New Year, nor Christmas, or even birthdays.

I moved cities when I was 8 so I never really held onto long-term friends or shared memories. I felt like I learned about everyone else's cultures but belonged nowwhere. The suburbs with grid streets, strip malls and box stores didn't encourage meaningful relationships with the land and we didn't have family around.

Since moving to the West Coast, I've slowly created my own special traditions. I love revisiting the same areas, showing different friends my favorite places. You might have noticed the repeat photos over years as I revisit the same areas with Whiskey. There's something about acknowledging the passage of time, in order to cherish it -to be to go back to the same places with the same sounds and smells and relive the memories of the years past, to create new ones.

This past weekend I took friends out to a lake I've been going to with Whiskey since she was 4 months old. It was where she first slept in a tent, met her first horse, and *almost* stole an entire chicken. Driving back I had this smile plastered on my face. I may not have grown up with an ingrained culture but hey, we can all make our own and mine is pretty dang awesome.
