Want a calmer puppy… and a calmer life? Start tethering.
This simple exercise teaches your puppy to settle, builds impulse control, and helps them learn to be calm and passive, even when life is happening around them.
Yes, even that wild little land shark can learn to just ~chill~
Yes, it takes practice.
But man, it’s worth it.
You’re teaching your puppy that they don’t need to be entertained 24/7. And that calm is a default state, not just something that happens after they crash from zoomies.
Here’s how to start:
🦮Use a leash (durable, if needed) to tether your puppy to something solid, like a door handle or heavy furniture.
🦴Set them up with a cozy bed and a safe chew.
👀 Supervise — but don’t engage. Let them figure it out.
⏳ As they progress, start removing “extras” until they can relax with just... nothing.
Expect them to whine or act restless at first. That’s normal. You’re giving them space to work through it, and the more you practice, the faster they’ll settle, and the longer they’ll be able to remain in a calm headspace.
And while this is an absolute top tip for puppy raising, it benefits any dog at any age who needs some help in the chill department.
Calm dogs aren’t born. They’re built!
