Fun & Educational Guinea Pig Facts
• Guinea pigs aren’t actually pigs—and they’re not from Guinea! They originate from the Andes in South America.
• Their teeth never stop growing, which is why constant access to hay is essential to prevent dental disease.
• Guinea pigs can’t make their own vitamin C (just like humans), making them prone to Scurvy if their diet isn’t balanced.
• A happy guinea pig will “popcorn”—jumping and twisting in the air when excited 🥹
• They communicate with a variety of sounds, including “wheeking” (often when they hear food preparation!)
• Guinea pigs are hindgut fermenters, meaning their digestive system relies heavily on gut bacteria—sudden diet changes can cause serious issues.
• They practice coprophagy (eating special soft f***s) to absorb essential nutrients—this is completely normal and healthy!
• Guinea pigs are highly social and should ideally live with other guinea pigs to prevent loneliness and stress.
• Their eyes are positioned on the sides of their head, giving them a wide field of vision—but poor depth perception.
• Guinea pigs are born fully furred with open eyes, ready to explore shortly after birth!
