I don’t believe in punishing roosters… I believe in ✨portable accountability✨.

Small but Mighty 🐓 decided to choose chaos this morning, so I scooped him up, tucked him into my chore overalls, and carried him around like the spicy little farm burrito he is. 💁🏼‍♀️🐓

No yelling. No drama. Just forced cuddles and a front-row seat to watch me do farm chores while contemplating his life choices. By the time we were done, he had fully reconsidered his tough-guy era and went back to the flock like nothing ever happened.

Love them into submission, friends. That’s the method. 😌

I know our little spidey-friends are SO GREAT around a farm and garden but those photos can’t quite capture the ABSOLUTE INVASION that was happening in and on the goat barn(these are before and after of some of the spaces).
Every corner, crack and crevice was inhabited by an 8-legged arachnid 🕷️ including the very doorway I had to pass through daily. Generally I will leave a few little Charlottes around to take care of the flies and other undesirables but this was as if none of charlotte’s babies had cast their little silk web balloons and instead all had failure to launch.
Now don’t be alarmed. That spray is nothing but a peppermint deterrent that won’t hurt two-four-six-eight legged or more farmyard creatures but instead will hopefully encourage them to build their homes in the lovely nearby trees and not the goat’s abode.

After trying (and failing) to make keeping a rooster work on the backyard mini farm we found a loving and exciting home for him at a friend’s farm.

While many of my neighbors were not bothered by him, some were and until we are in a space without close neighbors, a Rooster just won’t work. We can keep them where I live (per county regulations) but it’s not an ideal situation when considering our neighbors.

This is something that anyone consider keeping chickens needs to have a plan for. Unexpected or accidental roosters. Whether you get your chicks from a breeder, hatchery, or hatch your own, there is always possibilities of having Roosters. We have been fortunate to find homes when needed for our accidental two but that not always an option. Know what your plan is prior to getting chicks. 🐣
