George, with the cutest face ever! I can't believe they made up all those lies about you. They said you jumped on their backs while on walks and tried taking the leash from them. I just don't think that could be true! That is the face of an angel 😇

This is a great example of what you should see when looking down over the top of your dog. If you don't see this shape, you need to cut back on the food and/or treats. Dogs are not emotional eaters, people are.

Do you notice the difference in the dog in the top photo vs the bottom photo? In the top photo, the dog is holding his Down command, so he might look like everything is great. What you can't see in the picture is his panting and lip licking, while he watches cars going in and out of the parking lot. In the bottom photo, we have the icing on the cake, we have the calm state of mind as well as him holding the Down command. That is the piece that most folks are missing. The dog's mental state is so important. If you are still struggling with your dog in high-distraction environments, reach out and let us help!

This guy, however, was very anxious, panting, drooling, shaking, so what is the best thing for him? Work his mind! We can't control the weather or how loud it is, but we can give dogs another option, besides staying in a panicked state of mind. We will play storm sounds over the speaker this week and slowly get him desensitized to the sound.

I forgot to post this morning, these pups were unbothered by the storms!

Did you know? At Who’s Walking Who KC Dog Training, we don’t just say dogs improve—we measure it.

Before starting training, each client fills out a detailed questionnaire that assesses their dog’s obedience and behavioral challenges. Once the program is complete, they fill it out again.

The results are incredible:
📊 The average pre-training score is 39.
🚀 The average post-training score is 80.

That means dogs are not only learning obedience—they’re overcoming behavioral struggles in a big way.

Are you ready to see that kind of transformation in your dog? Let’s change the way you walk together—starting today.

What is the one thing that can make dog training smooth or a challenge? The answer is timing.

When it comes to teaching obedience, if the timing is perfect, the dog will very quickly understand what it is that you want him/her to do. By that I mean indicating to the dog when it did the right thing. If your timing is off, it will take more reps and more work to get there.

The same thing goes for correcting your dog for bad behaviors. If a dog has a stimulation scale of 0-100, the lower on that scale that we can correct the dog, the more successful we will be at putting an end to the behavior quickly. For example, if a dog likes to jump on people, right as the dog is thinking about jumping up on someone the dogs stimulation level might be a 20. However once the dog is actually up on the person it might be a level 60. If I apply the same correction while the dog is at a 20 or at a 60, the correction to the dog at a stimulation level 20 will have more of a lasting memory to the dog then when at the level 60 with the same correction. In fact the dog may not have really felt the correction when the dog is stimulated to that level.

It is because of this why we train dogs to ignore other dogs and other people. Why we correct a dog for staring at other dogs, or locking in on people. The moment the dog locks in, the stimulation level for the dog is escalating. We want to correct this before the dog is over a threshold where they are growling, barking, or lunging. An early intervention will go much further than waiting for the bad behavior and then correcting. The objective is to keep the dog calm. A well timed correction will keep the dog in a calmer state of mind with a better memory for consequences.

Dog owners, is your goal to have your dog sit when you give treats, give a high five, or shake? Or would you like to be able to live your life with your dog involved in activities, and not be an embarrassment to you?

What I am talking about is functional obedience. What does that mean? Most dogs can sit, lay down, roll over, and shake. But do those things translate into an obedient dog? No, functional obedience is being able to have people to your house, and your dog doesn't go crazy at the door. It means taking your dog for a walk and your dog doesn't care if there are other people out for walks with their dogs. It means you can stop and talk to the neighbor without your dog trying to jump on them. It means your dog can ignore things that are going on around them.

Our programs focus on functional obedience. What we are teaching is how to make your time with your dog enjoyable when out in public, or when people come to the house. No need to live in fear of your dogs behavior. Yes, reactive and aggressive dogs can also learn to not lose their mind at other dogs or people.

Working dogs around each other is a major component to our Day Training program. If you would like your dog to behave in the presence of other dogs, functional obedience is what you and your dog need.

That moment when you see a lady almost lose her dog in the Petsmart parking lot, using my favorite set up (flexi leash and a harness) she finally resorted to picking up the dog. As I looked a little closer, I realized it was the same lady that asked me for advice just last week, then decided she would just do the training herself. 🤔

If we were to look at us as humans, what creates the biggest conflict or drama among humans? I would say emotions and poor communication.

If we were to look at what creates the most conflict between us and our dogs, I would say emotions and poor communication.

Why do you think dog trainers can make progress so quickly with dogs that owners have struggled with for years? We have no emotional baggage with the dog, and we are very clear in our communications.

The longer I do dog training, the better of an understanding I have of the psychology of relationships. The interesting thing is that the same problems that cause disfunction between us and other humans, are the same problems that cause disfunction or conflict between us and our dogs.

When people have dogs that need help with obedience or with behavior issues, would you be surprised to know that our focus is the human? Isn't that weird that we are called dog trainers, but really we are dog owner trainers? If we can get the owner past the emotional baggage with their dog, and we teach them how to clearly communicate with their dog, this is when a dog will thrive. Of course we are training the dog, and that is typically the easy part of training. The human is the challenging part, but where the biggest changes need to happen for success.

If you are struggling with your dog, are you ready to remove the emotions and provide the leadership your dog is looking for?

Dog obedience will never be perfect. Even the most highly trained dogs will have off days. Anyone that does any type of sport work with their dog has had the experience of their dog being rock solid at something, then it comes to a trial and the dog acts like they have never done the task before. It is frustrating and humbling at the same time.

When you go through training, we lay ground work on what you will need to do to make your dog the best he/she can be. Once you have completed the training, you must continue to do the same things daily that you did with your dog through training. Meaning being consistent in the enforcement of the rules that the dog learned through training is what will keep the dog from regressing.

However, life happens. We are all busy, we get it. If your dog regresses, it isn't because you are a failure as a dog owner, it just means that you will have to dedicate more time to keeping up on your dog's obedience. It isn't that your dog forgot obedience, it is that you forgot to enforce the obedience and your dog is taking advantage of that.

Guess what? We as dog trainers go through this same thing with our dogs. We let some things slide, until we are annoyed enough with the behavior and then tighten up the obedience again. When people contact us to do a refresher, we don't look at the owner as a failure with their dog, in fact we view it as the owner is ready to commit to making things good again and just needs help on the reset.

No matter what your struggles are with your dog, we are here to help. We want to help you. If you are a previous client and are struggling with obedience, give us a call. We can give you suggestions. Or get your dog in for a refresh. You don't need to be a prisoner of your dog's behaviors.

A common misconception is that when you see a muzzled dog you immediately think "that dog must be aggressive" which is a lot of the time untrue! Muzzles can be used for a lot of things and here is just a brief list of a few things:

1. To keep the dog safe and comfortable when meeting new people/animals

2. Prevent injuries to skin or other ailments, a lot of the time you will see dogs like greyhounds muzzled when around each other even if they are not dog aggressive. This is because their skin is so thin it can easily tear or cut so even just a rough play session can turn into a vet trip for stitches quickly!

3. To keep the dog from putting things in their mouth that they aren't supposed to (like rocks out in the backyard when not supervised or other dogs droppings)

4. To prevent overexcitement or nipping, sometimes when dogs have free will to do whatever they want with their mouths they may choose the wrong decision so the muzzle keeps the excitement low and gives a boundary to play nipping

5. Condition them to the experience of having the muzzle on their face before they have to go to a vet or a groomer. Even if they aren't aggressive the vet is a scary place! If they are not feeling well they may bite and nip at the vet or technicians so it keeps everyone safe and comfortable.
