Until you have an emergency with your pet, you most likely don't think about all of the things.
My suggestion to you is take a minute today and map out the closest emergency vet.
Next, look for some options, you might have an urgent situation that is after hours, but not life threatening. Call them to see what their limitations are. It is best to already know where you can go in that situation rather than trying to Google it when your dog is in pain, then later find out you went to a place in a panic only to realize you could have gone 1/2 a mile down the road and saved yourself hundreds of dollars.
Think about an emergency fund or Care Credit, have those things in place now.
Lastly, if your pet passes, you will be asked what you want to do with your pet. Do you want to take your pet home with you to bury on your property? If not, you will be asked about cremation, but there are fees associated with that and more options as far as keepsakes, along with more fees. Again, just some things to think about when you are NOT in the middle of a pet emergency. Call and ask questions so you are not blindsided in the middle of an emergency.

"Do we HAVE to have a raised cot for PLACE?"

Nope, but it makes it a whole lot easier to avoid this situation. When you use the raised cot, there is a clear boundary when you are on and when you are off, with a soft bed, the lines are a little more fluid.
Make your life easier, have clear boundaries, give consequences for noncompliance and be consistent.
Is this a "bad dog", no!
Has he completed the PLACE command, no.
Set your dog up for success, don't use things that will make it easy for them to blur the lines or be confused.

Client: "My dog won't hold the PLACE command"
Me: "Why does your dog have that option?"

Use the tools! Once your dog knows PLACE, put the end of the leash under the leg of the couch or a chair. Position your cot so that the dog can't get very far, as soon as your dog's paw comes off of PLACE, say NO and point back to the cot or use body pressure and walk your dog right back up on the cot. You have to pay attention and catch your dog as soon as they step off, so they know you mean business. When they are back up there, say yes! Do not give a treat if you had to return them to the cot.

Practice, practice, practice. Your dog needs to be able to hold place when you answer the door, while you are cooking dinner, while you are eating dinner, leaving the room to fold a load of laundry, etc. It won't happen if you don't practice it.

Stop giving your dog the option to blow you off!

What does that mean? It means you leave a drag leash on your dog (only when you are home) so that when you give a command and your dog hesitates or ignores you, you can simply take the end of the leash and give a quick correction, then guide them to what you want.

If you give a command, your dog ignores you and you do nothing about it, you have just taught your dog, they don't have to listen to you!

You are better off saying nothing, than to give a command and let your dog get away with blowing you off.

Are there some behaviors that you have tolerated because you think it's too late to start training your dog?

You have heard the saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks", right?

Well that is actually NOT the case! You absolutely CAN teach older dogs.

My personal dog was 5 when I adopted him and he had zero training, he was the hot mess express, for sure. Pulling, barking and lunging at bicycles, etc. In a very short time, he learned to be a perfect gentleman on walks and a great dog all around. If you need help, call us, we can make the life with your dog more enjoyable!

Are you a positive only training facility, or balanced training facility? We have an answer!

"We operate as a balanced training facility. This approach involves rewarding desired behaviors while also implementing appropriate consequences for undesirable actions. Our trainers initially began with positive-only methods, which are effective for teaching new commands. However, we found limitations when addressing behavioral issues such as reactivity, aggression, jumping, excessive barking, or leash pulling. By incorporating clear communication of 'no' to dogs, we've observed significant improvements in managing these challenging behaviors, often achieving results within days that were previously unattainable over months of reward-only training."

Have you seen this positive customer review? Check it out! We love hearing from you!

"We sent our dogs Lenny (7 months) and Ruby (1.5 years) to Who's Walking Who in hopes of just some basic obedience and the skills to have better control and a calmer house with 2 young dogs. We did the 2 week daycare package and were blown away with how much progress they made even after just the first week!"

I have a lot of folks contact me that say, "my dog freaks out in the kennel when I leave the house". My first reply is the same, you need to get your dog ok with being in the kennel when you ARE home before expecting him/her to be ok in there when you are not home. Yes that means you need to practice by putting your dog in the kennel just because. Not as time out, but just because. Your dog needs to feel neutral about the kennel. Think about it like this, most dogs sleep a majority of the time you are gone. Look at these 2 pictures and what is different about them? Geography, the dog is doing the same exact thing, sleeping, except one of the dogs is 1 foot over and inside the kennel, that is the only difference. It is not logical to allow a dog to destroy property by either chewing on furniture, wood trim, sheetrock, or using the bathroom all over your home simply because he/she doesn't "like" the kennel. Take the time to properly introduce your dog to the kennel, make it a positive place, place food and water at the back of the kennel so they have to choose to go in, leave the door open, do lots of drills, in and out, quick, no time to panic. If you are struggling, reach out and let us help!
