🐱 Sandy’s Recovery Update

We’re pleased to share that Sandy is making fantastic progress. He’s now wearing a specialist boot on his back paw to support his mobility, and he’s become more active in recent days.

Sandy has also been well enough to receive his vaccinations, make a few feline friends, and remind us all just how gentle and affectionate he truly is.

He remains under veterinary care while his internal health continues to stabilise, but his journey so far has been incredibly positive.

Thank you for keeping him in your thoughts.

Today marks one whole year since Dexter, our handsome German Wirehaired Pointer, came into our care, and he’s still seeking out his forever home. 💚

Dexter isn’t just an active, outdoorsy boy, he’s also incredibly affectionate. He’s spent a few nights with different members of the kennels team, and at home, there’s nothing he loves more than curling up in your lap for a snooze (yes, he thinks he’s kitten-sized) or settling down at the foot of the bed. He’s a seriously goofy dog, and he’s hilarious to watch bounce around. 🐾

Dex is a playful and loving soul with so much to give but he does need a home that understands his needs. He’s is looking for someone strong (he’s a big boy!) and committed to continuing his training. He needs people who can understand him and his triggers, and who are willing to help him work through his dog reactivity. Dexter is an incredibly loyal dog to whoever he loves most and he’s still searching for that companion. Most of all, he needs a loving home where he can finally feel safe and settled. 🏡

As much as we love him and will miss him, we can’t wait to see him find the home he deserves. If you think you could offer Dexter a loving home, please contact the kennels team on [email protected] or leave a message on 01624 851672 ext. 1 ☎️

🐰 Motley is a super cheeky boy who is looking for his new home. He is a happy, bouncy boy who loves to explore and will need a lot of space.

He is looking for a home which already has a spayed female rabbit for him to bond with, as rabbits are social animals and prefer to live in pairs.

📧 If you already own a female rabbit who has been spayed and would consider taking on Morley, please email [email protected] with a completed Home Finder Questionnaire Form.

🖤 Leonardo DiCatrio is an adorable young boy who is looking for his new home where he will get lots of love and attention. He is a sweet boy but does start off quite timid so is looking for a new home where his owners will give him lots of time to adjust to his new environment and understand that this may be a slow process. Due to this he cannot be rehomed with children under 10.

He is used to living with lots of other cats so may benefit from a home which already has a cat that he can be friends with and help him settle in.

Whilst briefly in his second home for a few weeks he did have some toileting issues while also still using his litter tray, this may be something that occurs once he is in his next home so his new owners will need to be understanding and willing to manage this.

📝 If you think you could offer Leonardo his new home, please contact the cattery via email ([email protected]) with a completed Home Finder Questionnaire Form.

🕊 Racing Pigeons
There have been a few reports of racing pigeons having pit stops on the island in gardens and so we wanted to give some advice on what to do.
🏁Racing pigeons can complete flights as long as 1,100 miles. Their average flying speed over moderate 600 miles distances is around 60 miles per hour and speeds of up to 100 miles per hour have been observed in top racers for short distances. It's no wander they need a pit stop especially with changing weathers.
🫶The Royal Pigeon Racing Association ask those that do find one in their garden to offer bird food or crushed cornflakes and a deep dish of water to help them continue their flight. Please DO NOT feed them bread. It's recommended to remove the food source after 48 hours, otherwise the bird will not leave to continue their journey. They may take up to 7-10 days resting in an area.
🚑If the pigeon is injured, you can use The Royal Pigeon Racing Association website to find the owner of the pigeon by adding the pigeons code number found on their leg tag and taking them to your nearest Vet where they will be cared for following the Veterinary Code of Conduct- free of charge.

We have quite a few Herring Gull Chicks in our care already and have received calls about numerous others.

🪺 We would like to remind everyone that Gulls, their active nests, eggs and chicks, are all legally protected.

Perceived 'nuisance' is not a valid legal reason for destroying or moving nests, eggs or young chicks.

Chicks start wandering around soon after hatching, but frequently fall off rooftops and into our streets. Young chicks who aren't yet at the fledgling stage should be placed back onto the rooftop near their nest or on a nearby lower roof above the ground, if safe to do so, where their parents will continue to feed them. If you are unable to get them back up to the nest they can be moinitored on the ground as the parents should come down to feed them. They can also be moved to a nearby garden for safety close to their nest.

❌ Unless they are in imminent danger of being run over on a busy road or attacked by another animal, a healthy fledgling should be left alone.

☂️ Be careful - concerned parent gulls may swoop and try to protect their chick if you approach them. This is normal and shows that they are taking care of the chick. Holding an umbrella over your head will stop them from making contact.

🎁 The gull chicks in our care go through a large amount of food so any donations of cat or dog tinned food would be greatly appreciated, as well as any puppy pads.

☀️ Keeping Cats Cool This Summer 🐾
Hot weather can be tough on our feline friends, but a few simple steps can help:
✔️ Always check sheds, greenhouses & summerhouses before shutting them – cats love cosy spots but could overheat if trapped.
🚫 Never leave pets in cars, conservatories or caravans – temps can hit deadly levels fast.
💨 Keep a breeze flowing where safe, or use secure window locks for indoor cats.
🧴 Use pet-safe sun cream on pale cats' ears & noses – ask your vet if unsure.
💧 Fresh water, shady spots, ice cube treats & damp towels all help cool things down.
🧽 Regular grooming removes excess fur and helps your cat feel cooler.
A little extra care goes a long way 💚

🕶 Cool Dog Summer Essentials ☀️🐾
Make sure your four-legged friend is staying safe, stylish, and cool this summer with these top warm-weather tips:
🐾Paw protection first – Always check the pavement with your hand; if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them.
🐶Walkies with a view – Head out at dawn or dusk when it’s cooler. Enjoy those beautiful sunrises and sunsets together.
✂️Groomed to chill – Keep their coat tidy and trimmed (appropriate to breed!) to help beat the heat.
☀️Sun smart – Use pet-safe sunscreen on pale or exposed skin, especially noses and ears.
💧Hydration heroes – Ensure fresh, clean drinking water is always available, indoors and out.
💦Splash zone approved – Set up paddling pools or sprinklers for a fun and refreshing cool-down.
🍧Frozen treats & chill spots – Offer frozen dog-safe goodies, and provide cool, damp towels or shaded rest areas.
⭐A little extra care goes a long way during the warmer months. Let’s make this a safe, happy, and tail-wagging summer for all!

🐶 We've seen a rise in the number of dogs gifted into our care over the past month. Thanks to those already registered to adopt, most have been successfully matched with loving new homes—often without the need for public appeals.

However, three of our dogs – Cooper, Dexter, and Star – are still waiting for their forever families.

⭐ You can learn more about them on our website, where you can also register your interest in adopting with our new online forms. Whether you're looking to rehome a specific dog or want to be considered for any future arrivals, registering helps us find the right match more quickly.

🦔 Recently there has been an increase in hedgehogs being seen out during the day.

☀️ The warmer weather brings a potential reduction in food and available water sources, meaning the hedgehogs are struggling to find food and water naturally.

However, there are ways in which we can help them:

💚 Hedgehogs love tinned dog or cat food and crushed dog or cat biscuits. Hedgehog specific food is also available from pet stores as well as various other shops and online. Please never feed hedgehogs bread as it is low in nutrients or fish flavoured food.

💚 Leave a shallow dish of clean water but don’t put milk out as this can cause upset their stomachs.

There are many other ways you can help hedgehogs including “Hedgehog Highways” and creating wild areas in the garden. The British Hedgehog Preservation Society has lots of useful information on their website.

🚨 Duckling drama at the cattle grid! 🐥
Last week, 8 adventurous ducklings took a wrong turn and ended up stuck—but thanks to a quick call, a kind Kiwi carer, and some teamwork, we carefully lifted the grid bars and reunited the fluffy explorers with their very relieved mum.
A grid escape, a family reunion, and 8 happy endings. 💛
