🐛 RAGWORM – “GIFT FROM NATURE” OR A SCIENTIFIC CHALLENGE?| RAGWORM WORKSHOP 2026 🐛
🌾 Ragworm is a seasonal source of income for many households in brackish-water areas. With high economic value and steady market demand, ragworm has become an important livelihood, not just a local delicacy.
However, ragworm production still faces major fluctuations:
• Yields vary widely, around 20–600 kg per rod
• Many farming models rely on experience, with no unified standard procedure
• Feed and inputs are mostly improvised, using chicken bran, corn kernels, soybean meal, straw, composted manure, etc.
These gaps can lead to significant differences in income between seasons. Ragworm quality is inconsistent, and prices change depending on color and size.
🧪 In response, VNF, in collaboration with Viet Tin Nutrition JSC, has implemented trials of biological solutions aimed at developing a more controlled farming model—reducing fluctuations and enhancing overall value.
📍 Initial results and technical orientations were shared at the February 5 workshop in Tien Lang (Hai Phong), attended by more than 150 pond owners and traders from Vietnam and China—reflecting growing interest in sustainable ragworm farming.
🎤 Representing VNF, Ms. Nguyen Thi Giang Anh highlighted the potential of integrating science into ragworm farming and the role of biological solutions in stabilizing productivity and quality. Providing technical insights, Dr. Ngo Hong Phuong (Nong Lam University – Ho Chi Minh City) presented nutritional analyses and the scientific basis behind the trials.
Key technical approaches include:
• Shrimp peptides to support growth and survival rates
• Astaxanthin to enhance health and pigmentation
• Probiotics to help stabilize pond environments
🤝 Farmers also expressed a strong desire for specialized feed, standardized procedures, and long-term support from businesses and experts.
🌱 When ragworm farming follows a scientific process, “nature’s seasonal bounty” can become a proactive and sustainable livelihood for farmers.
🙏 VNF sincerely thanks the organizers, speakers, and ragworm farmers for sharing real-world insights and helping make this workshop a valuable contribution to the ragworm industry.
