Yesterday, the Chilean Rose Hair tarantula, Grammostola rosea, was officially added to CITES Appendix II.
CITES—the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species—regulates global wildlife trade to ensure it doesn’t threaten species survival. Appendix II includes species that aren’t necessarily endangered yet but could become so if trade isn’t carefully controlled.
With this new listing, international trade of Grammostola rosea will now require permits which aren't so simple to aquire, helping ensure specimens are sourced legally and sustainably. This change will have a significant impact on the global tarantula trade, especially within the pet hobby, as exporters and importers adjust to the new regulations.
A small spider with a big moment for conservation and responsible trade. 🌍
