As we are facing historical heatwaves everywhere, humans are not the only ones to suffer from it! It's very important keep our animals safe in the heat as heatstroke can be fatal for our pets.
1. Provide plenty of fresh, clean water
As pets can get dehydrated very quickly, giving them plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot or humid outdoors is essential.
2. Avoid walks and exercises during hottest hours
Nobody likes to go outside when it's too hot, your dog is the same. But it still needs his bathroom break! Plan early morning or late evening walks and check surfaces (especially asphalt and sand) before walking your dog. If it is too hot for your feet, it is too hot for your dog’s paws and there is a high risk of burns!
3. Never leave your pet alone in a parked carDuring hot days, the car's interior temperature can quickly climb above 45°. Dogs in hot cars can suffer from potentially fatal heat stroke in as little as 15 minutes.
4. Do not shave your pets
Contrary to what some people think, it is highly unadvisable to shave your fluffy companions. Pets’coat acts like insulation and if it keeps them from getting too cold in the winter, it also keeps him from overheating in the summer. Shaving your cat or dog can lead to discomfort, overheating and other serious dangers like sunburn or skin cancer.
5. Provide shaded and well ventilated shelter
As access to fresh water, access to shaded and well ventilated shelter is essential for your pet safety
6. Take your pet to the vet ASAP in case of heatstroke
Heatstroke can occur very quickly and result in death in under an hour, especially if your pet does not have access to shade, water, and rest. Please take your pet immediately to the local emergency veterinary hospital if you suspect heatstroke. Some of the most common signs are: excessive panting, tachycardia (fast heart rate), dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, disorientation, weakness. Older and overweight pets are more at risk as well as the brachycephalic breeds.
