Another preemie litter pupdate!

Mieke (formerly Lainey) was the largest of the 2 puppies. She was a Rockstar from the start and continues to do great per her dad's report ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿพ

I love getting updates from my puppy families...hearing how well they're doing and about the joy they bring to the lives around them, but these updates hit a little different. This litter was the most memorable because of the struggles we faced together and I'm just in awe looking at them now!

Happy belated 1๏ธโƒฃst birthday sweet girl!

Who remembers our preemie litter from last year?

We got a pupdate on Moose (formerly Wilson) yesterday! Look at this handsome fella ๐Ÿ˜

They turned 1๏ธโƒฃ year old June 3rd!

I had moments with this guy in particular where I wasn't sure he would experience the world outside of that whelping box...but God. His family's update really made my heart smile big! So thankful to have been apart of his journey into this world to bless the lives of his amazing family ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿพ

If we want to make better breeding decisions, we have to start with which health issues are most concerning in Dachshunds, not guesses, not one vets experience in practice, and not whatever gets argued about most online ๐Ÿ’ฌ

The DachsLife 2018 survey gave us that big picture by collecting health information on 2,564 Dachshunds and charting which diseases owners reported most often ๐Ÿ“Š For a single breed, that is a very large sample size, far bigger than most veterinary studies ever manage in one breed, which is why this graph is so important.

In the bar graph, IVDD is shown as the most prevalent health issue in the breed ๐Ÿฆด

Just behind it are conditions like:
โฅ Skin allergies and atopy (genetic predisposition to develop allergic diseases)
โฅ Cancers and tumours
โฅ Cryptorchidism (undescended testicle(s))
โฅ Several reproductive issues
โฅ Heart disease

Then we see:
โฅ Neurologic conditions such as idiopathic epilepsy
โฅ Immune mediated and inflammatory disease
โฅ Gastrointestinal issues like inflammatory bowel disease
โฅ Orthopedic problems including pes varus and other limb issues

Much further along the graph you reach the rarer conditions, this is where PRA appears down near the tail of the distribution alongside things like liver shunt, hip dysplasia, SARDS and Lafora. The exact percentages matter less here than the pattern. Most of the overall health burden in this breed is coming from spinal disease, skin and allergy problems, cancers, heart and endocrine disease, neurologic conditions like epilepsy and structural problems such as patellas and pes varus, with PRA and other rare inherited diseases sitting much lower in comparison.

This survey is not just a casual online poll ๐Ÿšซ

โฅ DachsLife 2018 was run by Dachshund Health UK and the UK Dachshund Breed Council, the main health body for the breed that works closely with the Kennel Club and the Royal Veterinary College on research and screening programs.
โฅ The same team has run multiple large surveys in 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2021, and the 2015 DachsLife data on IVDD have been published in a peer reviewed veterinary journal ๐Ÿ“–
โฅ The Kennel Clubs own large health surveys show the same main themes for Dachshunds, especially around IVDD, skin disease, epilepsy and other chronic issues.

In other words, DachsLife 2018 is part of a consistent, multi year evidence base, not a one off outlier โœ…

It is completely reasonable to care deeply about specific conditions or to want your dog to be free of certain genetic and health risks ๐Ÿ’— The problem comes when breeders or puppy buyers focus almost entirely on a very rare disease while giving much less attention to the conditions that are far more common and often more devastating for the breed.

DachsLife 2018 gives us the context to:
โฅ See the rare conditions
โฅ Recognise that they should not take priority over major issues like IVDD, chronic skin disease, cancers, heart problems, epilepsy and serious structural disorders when we are setting health priorities.

For breeders, understanding this prevalence picture is essential for deciding which dogs to pair, where to bring in new lines and which risks can realistically be reduced over time. For pet owners, it is just as important when you are evaluating breeders and asking questions about testing and health history ๐Ÿ“

We are not going to eliminate every disease on this bar graph, but DachsLife 2018 gives us a clear, data driven picture of where health concerns lie for the breed ๐Ÿง  By taking this survey seriously, and by combining health testing, genetic testing and transparent pedigrees, breeders and pet owners can make choices that genuinely reduce risk in the conditions that commonly affect the Dachshund breed ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ

Summer has officially arrived in North Carolina, which means the bugs and critters are back in full force ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ

This morning, this girl found out the hard way that yellowjackets are not friends, and within seconds she was pawing at her face and panicking ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿพ

Because I was outside with her and watching, getting my usual morning dose of dachshund antics and entertainment, I saw the behavior change before I ever saw swelling. That let me get her inside, check her nose to tail, start Benadryl, and get on the phone with one of our vets right away. A couple of hours later she still has some swelling, but it is significantly better than it was and we can finally laugh about how she briefly looked like a very confused little cocker spaniel ๐Ÿš‘๐Ÿ˜‚

A few takeaways for dog owners as we head into the warm months:

โฅ Be out there supervising, especially if your dogs have access to woods, tall grass, or brush where insects and snakes hang out ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ
โฅ Do a quick โ€œnose to tailโ€ check when they come back inside so you can catch problems before they snowball ๐Ÿ‘€
โฅ Keep a **dog safe** antihistamine like Benadryl on hand, and know your dogโ€™s dose ahead of time. Always confirm with your veterinarian for your dogโ€™s weight, health, and any medications they are on ๐Ÿ’Š
โฅ If you use liquid Benadryl, double check the label to be sure it does not contain xylitol or other additives that are toxic to dogs ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿงช
โฅ Have your regular vet and the nearest emergency clinic numbers saved in your phone and somewhere visible at home so you are not scrambling when seconds count ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿฅ

Even as a nurse who is used to emergencies, I had a brief moment of panic before my brain kicked into gear and I did what I know to do ๐Ÿง โค๏ธ In those urgent moments our dogs do not need us to open an app and ask for a hundred opinions, they need us to act, call a vet, and use the tools we have ready. Our dogs have a way of turning minor scares into reminders about why being prepared, present, and educated matters so much ๐Ÿพโœจ

โœจ Genetic Testing vs. Health Testing in Dachshunds โœจ

Itโ€™s pretty widely known that many breeders still donโ€™t see the importance of health testing, and while that has never sat well with me, itโ€™s unfortunately nothing new. What Iโ€™m finding even more concerning lately is how many breeders are now openly sharing that they donโ€™t genetically test their dogs either, for all kinds of reasons. The reality is that, no matter where we are in our breeding journey, there isnโ€™t a good reason to ignore the tools we have to breed the healthiest dogs we can. When we skip health and genetic testing, we are choosing to breed with blind spots, and those unseen risks can impact not just our own dogs, but the long term welfare and preservation of this breed we all care about.

As we head through June, Iโ€™ll be focusing my educational posts on two things that are often mentioned, but not always clearly understood:

๐Ÿ”ฌ Genetic testing
๐Ÿฉบ Health testing

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
These topics tie into a phrase we see a lot lately, โ€œethicalโ€ or โ€œresponsibleโ€ breeder.
๐Ÿ’ก While many interpret these differently, in welfare and breeding guidelines that phrasing is actually clearly defined...an ethical breeder is someone who prioritizes the health, welfare, and longโ€‘term preservation of the breed, and who uses available, evidenceโ€‘based tools to help guide their choices. That includes caring about the whole dog:
โ€ข structure
โ€ข temperament
โ€ข pedigree
โ€ข genetics
โ€ข physical health
๐Ÿพ As the breed has grown in popularity, more people are entering dachshunds as breeders. Unfortunately, weโ€™re also seeing some people move over from heavily, historically irresponsibly bred breeds and bring the same โ€œprofit over healthโ€ mindset with them.
Thatโ€™s worrying for the longโ€‘term health and stability of the breed, and itโ€™s one of the reasons I think itโ€™s so important that those of us who care about preservation band together, to educate, to share good information, and to thoughtfully guide the people we might mentor.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
๐Ÿงฌ Genetic testing vs. ๐Ÿฉบ health testing

These are two different tools that look at two different parts of the picture.

๐Ÿงฌ Genetic testing
Looks at a dogโ€™s DNA and helps us understand what they might pass on, whether they are clear, carriers, or at risk for certain testable conditions.

๐Ÿฉบ Health testing
Looks at how the dog is doing right now, using exams and screenings (like OFA and other recommended checks) to evaluate the dogโ€™s actual physical status.

๐Ÿ‘‰ One does not replace the other.

If we only do genetic testing, we may miss current health or structural concerns.

If we only do health testing, we may miss whatโ€™s silently carried and can be passed on.

When we use both together, we get a fuller view of whatโ€™s going on inside the dog, not just what we can see on the outside.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
๐Ÿงฉ Each dog as a puzzle
I like to think of each dog as a puzzle made up of many pieces.
๐Ÿงฉ structure
๐Ÿงฉ movement
๐Ÿงฉ temperament
๐Ÿงฉ pedigree
๐Ÿงฉ genetics
๐Ÿงฉ health, etc.
When we breed, weโ€™re trying to fit two puzzles together in a way that complements strengths and weaknesses and creates as complete a picture as possible.
Testing doesnโ€™t guarantee perfection, nothing in living beings is 100%, but it does give us more pieces to work with, and it helps us reduce avoidable risk.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
๐Ÿ“… Whatโ€™s coming in June

Throughout June, Iโ€™ll be sharing more posts that dig into:

โ€ข what genetic testing and health testing actually are
โ€ข what they can and canโ€™t tell us
โ€ข how they fit in with pedigrees, structure, temperament, and the breed standard
โ€ข a few specific genetic mutations and what their tests really mean in dachshunds, including some that are often misunderstood or not widely talked about

My hope is that these feel like resources everyone can think about, ask questions on, and maybe use in their own programs if they resonate ๐Ÿ’ฌโค๏ธ
