Happy Earth Day - The Animal Shelter Society is accepting your aluminum cans all week in our lot located at 1430 Newark Road (behind Zane State College). We are thankful for our PAW-sitive Partnership with Muskingum Iron & Metal. They are going to match all donations for our 100% non-profit during this week. ♥️🐾🌎

West Muskingum FFA has once again shown their dedication & compassion to The Animal Shelter Society. Each year they present amazing donations. This year - they collected over 1k t-shirts to make rope toys for our animals. This produced over 700 toys & 5 boxes which we will utilize at our 100% non-profit organization and donate to our “go home bags” with adoptions. Part of our mission is education - many times our youth show up to educate us. This program is led by a top notch advisor and West M schools are very fortunate. Mr. Ty Dierkes would be extremely proud for both organizations. ♥️🐾

The Animal Shelter Society shows up for other non-profits as they serve our great community that we do. Our staff enjoyed our evening with Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake.

Our PAW-sitive Partner - Muskingum Iron & Metal Recycling Center will again this year be matching the aluminum can donations during Earth Week. Remember to drop off your aluminum cans to our bin during the week of April 21, 2025 through Saturday, April 26, 2025. These donations help us with our day to day operation expenses for our 100% non-profit organization.

We will be closing to Customer Service at 2:00pm today and will re-open Monday, April 21, 2025, 9:00am - 4:00pm (Closed for lunch 12:00pm - 12:30pm)
We are still on site tending to the over 100 animals in our care. Our animals do not care what day of the week or year it is, they still need taken care of 7 days a week!♥️🐾

Customer Service responsibilities include but are not limited to; greeting customers, answering phones, assisting with customer needs, scheduling appointments, light cleaning and attending to the needs of the shelter ambassadors. High integrity and honesty are strong attributes to this position.
Employee must be available 9am-4:00pm Monday - Friday (Closed Tuesday) Saturday 9:00am - 3:00pm, Position is 12-30 hours a week - We are a 100% non-profit with no government entity support.

Today was a stark reminder of the heartbreaking realities of homelessness. We assisted two different individuals forced to surrender their beloved dogs due to their own circumstances. One gentleman, homeless since his house burned down in December, tearfully gave up Dingo, his mother's dog he promised to care for. Hours later, a woman living in her car with her daughter and cat made the agonizing decision to surrender her dog, Bubby of ten years.
Our shelter was at capacity, and Dingo showed signs of loyal aggression, requiring a transfer to the K9 Center. Our Executive Director made sure both owners reached safety and support with driving the gentleman to Christ’s Table for resources. These weren't easy choices, but survival demanded them. Reclaiming is not an option for either individual. They have very limited financial resources & cannot afford the additional costs associated with housing with pets.
Financial restrictions are just one issue associated with pet ownership.
There is no shame in homelessness or in loving an animal so much that you prioritize their well-being, even through surrender. The true shame lies in a system that forces such painful separations. Tonight, two heartbroken owners are without their companions, and two confused, scared dogs are missing their families. Animals feel deeply. Let's remember the love and loss on both sides of this difficult equation. Tonight, hearts are broken on both ends of the leash. We must do better. 🐾💔

It is under a tarp to the left of our building as you pull in. Please help yourself but only take what you need. Be thoughtful of others with pets. 🐾♥️
