A great evening for the Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce business mixer. As a 100% non-profit organization, The Animal Shelter Society works diligently to gain resources and this mixer is a great networking experience. Thank you Jim Watson and the staff at The Barn for great food and service.
The most celebrated summer holiday - July 4th is the least favorite for the pets. The new laws that the Governor put in place permits a longer time frame in discharging fireworks. This is terrifying to our pets. Do not count on your pet being okay with all of the sounds and visuals of the holiday. It is going to go on for a much longer period this year. Prepare now to protect your pet. Contact your veterinarian now for advice on possible medications etc. Prepare a room that is safe and as far away from the noise as possible. Please do not take your pet into the celebrations. Celebrate with your family but please leave the fur-children home.
The Animal Shelter Society is offering microchips for both dogs & cats at a special rate - $10.00 and one (1) gallon of liquid laundry detergent till July 3rd. This is a great service that permits us or most any rescue/veterinary office to get your pet back to you. No need to set appointment - We only request that you not bring your pet into our lobby until you have entered the shelter and have spoken with customer service.
Our customer service hours are 9a-4p Monday thru Friday (closed Tuesday) and 9a-3p on Saturdays. We close for lunch noon-12:30 pm daily. Your pet is worth it and it gives you a peace of mind. What we hear often is “my animal never goes outside” or “they always come back home”. The last 5 animals that had come into our shelter with microchips were also “inside” animals. Your pet is worth it and facilities are full before we even get started.

Put an education piece together this morning to help our public, supporters and community better understand some of the things that we do. This education is on why we do not have walkthroughs in the am. We open each day at 9am for customer service and close at 4:00 pm Monday through Friday (closed Tuesdays/Sundays). Customer service hours on Saturdays are 9a-3p. We close for lunch each day from noon - 12:30 pm. Our cat rooms and dog floor hours are 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm through the week and 12:30pm-2:15 pm Saturdays. We hope this explains why we do what we do. Bubba is a wonderful feline. He is a feline who gives you hugs, kisses and your own space when the time comes. The Animal Shelter Society, Inc. will be making sure the adopter has a groomer so Bubba can be kept free of mats etc with his beautiful fur. Bubba does like to be the only feline in the home and with a cat this size - you only need one. Stop by our facility located at 1430 Newark Road (Behind Zane State College) week days 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm (Closed Tuesdays)and Saturdays 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm to visit with Bubba and see the rest of our animals available for adoption. 🐾♥️

Think **very** carefully before you choose your dog and know that, although not always a perfect determination - The Animal Shelter Society works very diligently at knowing the temperaments, quirks, dispositions etc of each of our animals and working with you to adopt a great fit for your entire family. I am a 21st century dog. 🐾♥️
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, but … but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
We also think, at times, it is better to think about getting two, rather than one, so the dogs won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for the dogs to be alone. 🐾♥️

What an amazing TWO (2) days with employees of Nestle Purina Petcare Company. They had over 40 employees to complete four (4) very large projects with 15 hours of service at The Animal Shelter Society. As a 100% non-profit organization, we would not be able to complete these projects without great community partners such as Nestle Purina. One of the best portions was the education on what we do, how we do it, why we do it and the differences between for-profit and non-profit. The Animal Shelter Society would like to thank the entire committee, visionaries and JW & MH Straker Charitable Foundation for making sure the Zane's Trace Commemoration came back to our community. Each year, The Animal Shelter Society is happy to participate in the parade. It is great to see individuals come together for our community. The Animal Shelter Society distributes dog biscuits and this year - dog beds handmade by Peaceable Quilters for those who had dogs along the route. Several of these dogs were actually adopted from our 100% non-profit organization and the owners were sure to let us know. That makes for a doggone good day. We believe in participating and giving back to our community as our community always gives back to us. Thank you ZTC for another very successful parade and weekend. ♥️🐾
Please - Care for your pets. Take precautions. If going to be gone all day - remember it heats up. Prepare for the animals entire day. The Animal Shelter Society cannot educate enough on this. Fresh cool water every couple hours if they must be outside. Make sure they have shelter, food & water - that is required by law if they are kept outside. Note that long haired dogs (and cats) along with any pet that has a black/dark coat will heat up very quickly. Please care for your pets - they care for you. Dear Mom and Dad,
Let me stay home. It's not nice for me to walk and run next to you. But because I am a loyal dog, I often go beyond my limits. So I walk and run beside you, standing still if I have to. All while I feel my paws burning.
Even as little as 5 minutes can be fatal to me and to my paws. I sweat through my paws, and in the heat I just can not get rid of the sweat. My whole body starts boiling, but I’ll keep going because I am as loyal as loyal comes. When you look at me panting and moving around you think I’m excited to be out here walking or running with you and I am, I promise you I am, but it’s more that I can’t cool off and my feet are in severe pain. My paws are literally cooking.
By the time we have gotten home my paws have been burning the entire duration we were out, my tongue is dry and my head is pounding in the heat that my body cannot get rid of.
You know when you ask if I want to go for a walk or a run I will instantly jump up and want to go because I love you so much and I love these activities but I also don’t know what awaits me. I depend on you to know what’s in my best interest. So instead, let me stay at home where I can enjoy the sun, with a large bowl of water, somewhere in the shade. A cool area with grass would be best.

UPDATE - Both Bear & Bella Ann went to their furrever homes this week — Together. We are so very thankful that the adopter family understood the importance of keeping the litter mates together. What a great evening with great people supporting our great mission. TDT Party Band rocked it. A fantastic local band. Thank you Randy's Backyard BBQ for your donation. Y Bridge Brewing Company LLC had their special brews available for a donation with Brewmaster Ray Ballard. We appreciate that Ray always supports us. The Animal Shelter Society was able to donate just over 1200 pounds of dog/cat food and 14 boxes of dog biscuits to the pets of Frazeysburg. We always want to be able to give back when we can as our community always takes care of us. 🐾♥️

The Animal Shelter Society dogs each have their own swimming pools. We have been doing this during the summer months for several years. They absolutely love it when they can play in the water on these 80 degree days. However, we have a couple who absolutely destroy their pools. We have one & it works great for our larger dogs &. it cannot be chewed on. We are in need & cannot locate the Tyke heavy duty pools. If you have any that you are not utilizing - Please call (740) 452-1077 & ask for our Executive Director & we will pick them up. Our dogs would greatly appreciate it. Thank you 🐾♥️
Thank you Muskingum County Library System for the invitation to participate in the “Summer Reading Festival” again this year. It is always great to see everyone, especially the children. Education is a large part of our mission and being able to talk with the youth about the care of animals is extremely important to the Shelter. We have a large focus on educating on our 100% non-profit that has been in place since 1959. Thank you for everyone who stopped by our booth. Thank you - Thank you - Thank you 🐾♥️ The Animal Shelter Society’s Inaugural Pickleball 4 Paws was simply amazing. We are so appreciative of our community’s support, the donors, sponsors, Muskingum County Family YMCA, our staff, volunteers, Board of Directors, the Pickleball community and especially our co-chairs of PB4P, Dee Mel & Adam Agin. We had a full line up and courts were full. We are already working on 2025 with request for entire day tournaments. With these funds - we are able to continue to offer our low cost spay/neuter clinic’s and especially for our Veterans & Senior population. Had a participant’s family member apply for our Miss Sparrow (who lost an eye due to a humans actions) while they were participating at the event and they were approved and she went home at the end of the event to her furever home. Now that is a purrfect day. We had great participation bags with food - donations etc. The medals were amazing. Congratulations to all of the PB4P winners. In our opinion-you are all winners. It was really cool to watch our executive director speak with (11) cadet’s from the Zane State College Police Academy who stopped by before class to support her (she is also an instructor). It was their last day of instruction and they were treated to lunch by April at Randy’s Backyard BBQ food truck who was set up at OUZ for the Paws of Muskingum County event to support them as well. We are very fortunate in our community that we have the individuals we have caring for the animals that someone else did not. Thank you all 🐾♥️
After the dogs came back inside after spending the entire morning & afternoon in their beautiful outside kennel areas this Christmas Day - they chose special gifts from our supporters. Mr. Rory chose the grey lamb and is one happy boy in his kennel all nestled in his bed. You can hear our Executive Director gasp with happiness as he chose his special toy. It is how you make them happy is what matters. 🐾♥️

On this “Giving Tuesday” - The Animal Shelter Society’s 1st donation this morning came from a very special young lady - Miss Ashton. The note is worth the most with all her gratitude for us and the $20. is much appreciated. Thank you Ashton for giving to us 🐾♥️
Meet Ruger. He came to us from a facility with a pretty horrific skin condition that needed our vet staff’s care. He is good to go to a great active home. He is very appreciative that someone cares for him. He knows the basic commands, listens, loves walks, his swimming pool and caring people. One of our specialized volunteers, Steve Carrel has worked many hours with Ruger. We encounter a great deal at The Animal Shelter Society, Inc.. You never know what is going to show up. These “Guineas” have no idea how lucky they were that our staff were able to remove them from the outside K9 kennels. We are not just a Shelter - We are protectors of all animals but not all can come inside. The voice at the end is our Executive Director. The staff members are still laughing at it all and especially that the bird just about landed on the bosses head but they always step up. 🐾♥️🐦
Recently The Carr Center, Inc. came into The Animal Shelter Society, Inc. with a service project of feline enrichments for us. When pictures are captured at the shelter, We do not say “Cheeese”- “We say Meeeoooowww” 🐾♥️
The Animal Shelter Society’s Chief Veterinarian, Dr Decker’s “Pet of the Week” pick who also happens to be our Executive Directors pick everyday is Mr. Baxter. Mr. Baxter is our oldest K9 at the age of 11 years old. He has been fortunate to have been adopted 3 times from our shelter and placed in wonderful and caring homes. The unfortunate part is each one of the adopters has passed away bringing Baxter back to his known surroundings. He is still pretty active and loves people. He does not mind other dogs but cannot be around cats at any time. He loves his treats, toys and swimming pool. He would make a very loving companion for someone (without cats). Mr. Rory is our longest K9 resident being at The Animal Shelter Society, Inc. for over a year. He came in with his siblings & they all found great homes. He is a bit shy when you first meet him but comes around when he feels more comfortable. He gets along with other dogs and cats. Stop in to inquire about adopting Rory so he can enjoy the comfort of home like his brothers & sisters are. 🐾♥️
All of the dogs, like Mr. Gilbert here at The Animal Shelter Society, Inc. have their own swimming pools. On these hot days, it is very refreshing for them. They love their outside pool time.
