We Are Not Pets

‘You see our eyes, the amber fire,
the silver coats that whisper “wild.”
You lust for beauty, strength, desire—
but we are not your gentle child.

We are not pets.
We are the storm you cannot cage,
the howl that answers moonlit skies,
the restless heart that knows no age,
a forest burning in our eyes.

You take us home, a trophy prize,
and dream we’ll bend to leash and hand.
But wolfdogs do not compromise—
we are the call of untamed land.

We cannot be trained to heel and stay,
we think, we choose, we disobey.
Your rules mean nothing when the blood
of ancient wolves still floods our veins.

Left alone all day, shut in, ignored,
we’ll tear the walls, we’ll shred the floor.
Our hunger isn’t filled with food,
but work, and kin, and open moor.

Yes, only the rare and seasoned few,
with patience deep as mountain stone,
can share their lives with hearts like ours
and never leave us lost, alone.

So do not take us for our looks,
our piercing eyes, our wilderness.
We are not pets—
we are the echo of the wild
still breathing, unbroken,
inside a fragile world.’
