This pony went through severe laminitis on April 25, 2024. The coffin bone dropped and the collateral grove depth in the front of the foot went to zero. Also, the white line went to about an inch or more wide and was streaked with stretched, separating lamina. We trimmed the horse that day to reduce pressure on the inflamed lamina, switched the feed to something without molasses or carbohydrate grain, added salt/mineral to the diet and put the pony in a dry lot. We trimmed on a 2-week cycle for 2 cycles and then went to a 4-week cycle and have not missed a trim. After 6 months he started getting some limited pasture turn out with a grazing muzzle. What you see here are the results after 11 months. Folks, founder is not a death sentence. This pony is perfectly sound.

I’m very pleased with the results of this horse’s laminitis rehab thus far. The photo on the left is 2 months after having gone through laminitis. The photo on the right is one year after laminitis. I got to start working on this horse 2 weeks after the acute stage. We eliminated as much sugar out of the diet as possible, utilized padded hoof boots, and trimmed his feet every 28 days. He is now being used as a therapy horse and working comfortably barefoot.

These photos are taken before a 4 week maintenance trim of the same foot, 2 years apart. I love to see how a foot will continue to develop and improve with long term consistent maintenance. This horse only missed one trim in 2 years.
