Many of you know that horses can get Cushing’s Disease. But did you know that your dog can too?

Cushing’s disease, also known as hyperadrenocorticism, causes your dog’s adrenal glands to make too much of the stress hormone, cortisol. Your dog needs it for things like regulating body weight, fighting infections, and controlling blood sugar levels.

But too much of this stress hormone can damage your dog’s health … harming the kidneys and increasing the risk of diabetes. This disease happens most often in older dogs (over 8 years old), so keep an eye out for symptoms if you have a senior dog … or one of the breeds that are more prone to Cushing’s, like Poodles Dachshunds, Boxers, and various terrier breeds.

Here are some natural therapies, but you will also want to contact your vet. This is a very serious condition that needs to be managed properly.

1. Feed a low-fat diet.
2. Give herbs to support adrenal function. Herbs like dandelion root, burdock root, nettle, astragalus, and milk thistle are thought to be helpful.
3. Add supplements—Melatonin helps regulate hormones and maintain circadian rhythms. Lignans mimic phytoestrogen in the body, which may reduce estrogen production in the adrenal gland.
4. Try acupuncture—it’s known to reduce inflammation and help to regulate the endocrine system.

Cushing’s can be tricky to diagnose because the symptoms are shared with many other illnesses. If you notice any of the following clinical signs, talk to your veterinarian.

More tired than usual
Pot-bellied appearance
Frequent skin infections
Hungrier or thirstier than usual
Peeing more than usual, including having accidents indoors
Excessive panting
Loss of muscle mass and resulting weakness
Hair loss

Dogs and humans have different sleep patterns. For dogs, it takes them about 10 minutes to get into rapid eye movement (REM), also known as deep sleep. For dogs, about 10% of their 12 hours sleeping is in REM sleep.

In contrast, human sleep cycles include REM sleep for about a quarter of the time we’re sleeping. Because dogs don’t get as much REM sleep – they fall asleep easily and wake up alert – they need more sleep. But not all dogs need as much sleep. Age, breed, health and personality all play a part in how much your dog sleeps.

Living in the desert you want to make sure your dog is hydrated. Here’s a couple of tips to help you.

To check for dehydration: Pinch the skin at the back of your dog’s neck. It should bounce back immediately. If the fold takes 2 seconds or longer to return to normal, your dog is dehydrated and you need to get fluids into him quickly.

You can prepare an oat water recipe using 1 cup of whole (not instant) oats, 1/2 gallon of filtered water, 1/3 cup of molasses, and 1 tsp sea salt. Bring the water to a boil, add the remaining ingredients, and simmer for 5 minutes. Let it sit for 20 minutes, strain, and use the water.

You can syringe it into your dog’s mouth a bit at a time. Or you can use Pedialyte instead, to replenish electrolytes if the dehydration is due to vomiting and/or diarrhea.

In severe cases, your veterinarian can also provide you with a subcutaneous fluid so you can give fluids to your dog at home. Make sure to get a schedule of how often your dog should receive these fluids to keep him properly hydrated.

Talking frankly about spay/neuter is worth the backlash though, because of the health risks associated with it, especially in a young dog. One common result of spay/neuter is an increased risk of joint disease in your dog.

Unfortunately, many dog owners don’t know about the health risks of spay/neuter. Vets spend a lot of time telling you why you should spay or neuter your dog … but they spend very little time talking about why you shouldn’t. Be sure to do your research so that you can make the best possible decision for your dog.
