Star and Phoenix are such helpers when evaluating and working with dogs. Star, especially, is exceptional in her communication. She and I worked with Ember during her first Overnight Camp Retreat these past few days. At 7 months old, Ember has come to associate other dogs with total excitement and launches herself at them . Star communicated without aggression that she did not appreciate Ember’s approach, and then ignored her until she calmed down. I supported Star and showed Ember how to give another dog space and then approach respectfully to sniff and INVITE play. Teamwork!

It was a pleasure cat sitting for Tunes and Gogo for the first time. While Tunes came out and decided I was cool to hang out with, Gogo stayed safe under the bed, but was hopefully entertained by Tunes and I playing and chatting nearby. Gogo did feel calm enough to take a few treats!

This week, we met and evaluated PJ for boarding here! We will be doing some more Camp days and his owner will be doing homework around crate training to help this 9-month old get to a place where he is comfortable away from home.

Many people don’t understand the significance of crate training your dog. Even though I don’t crate dogs here, that skill is paramount for your dog because it enables them to handle any type of boundary and separation. I utilize kennel suites and baby gates in my home setup. But if your dog has only ever been allowed to run free in the home and is never asked to be in a certain area with boundaries, they can struggle greatly outside of your home.

My 3-year-old dogs still use their crates. Sometimes they go in and out on their own. They see it as their safe space, away from noise or stress. I also ask them to go in and close the door several times a day- sometimes for 15 minutes. Sometimes an hour. It’s no big deal to them- just a normal part of life.

The benefits? I can take them anywhere. Hotels, Airbnbs, friend’s, the vet. You never know if your dog will need to stay at the vet - if they are already comfortable in a crate, this layer of stress will be removed at an already difficult time.
