Our first Cuterebra (also known as a botfly larva) removal of the season! 😳🐱
This tiny kitten came to us with a swelling under the skin that turned out to be home to a Cuterebra larva. While it may look alarming, these parasites are most commonly found in curious outdoor cats and kittens during the warmer months.
🪰 What is a Cuterebra?
• Cuterebras are the larvae of botflies.
• They don’t lay eggs directly on pets. Instead, eggs are deposited near rabbit and rodent burrows, where curious cats and dogs can accidentally pick them up.
• The larva enters through the nose, mouth, or a small wound, then migrates beneath the skin, creating a lump with a small breathing hole.
⚠️ Signs to watch for:
• A firm lump under the skin
• A small hole that may drain fluid
• Licking or scratching at the area
• Pain or swelling
🚫 Never try to squeeze or remove one at home. If the larva ruptures during removal, it can cause a severe inflammatory reaction or infection. Safe removal by a veterinarian is the best option.
