Even though weāre a cat rescue, we know that dogs are an important part of many of our adoptersā families! We love seeing our cats find homes where they become part of a family that already includes a canine companion.
In honor of National Dog Day, here are a few tips for introducing your new cat and dog and helping them start off on the right paw.
š¾ Step 1: Smell ya later
Before they even meet, let them get familiar with each otherās scents. Swap blankets, beds, or toys so everyone can start learning those new smells.
The cat should also have their own dog-free safe room with food, water, a litter box, cozy hiding spots, and everything they need to feel secure while they figure out theseā¦ dogs.
š¾ Step 2: House tours
Let them explore each otherās spaces separately. The cat can check out the dogās hangouts while the dog investigates the catās space. No pressure. No staring contests.
š¾ Step 3: The sneak peek
Once theyāre comfortable with each otherās scents, they can see each other through a baby gate or other safe barrier. Keep the dog calmātreats help A LOT. š
No chasing. EVER. The cat should have escape routes and access to high places where they can get away from all that exciting dog energy. A cat tree = excellent.
š¾ Step 4: Supervised hangouts
Once everyone seems comfortable, they can start spending short periods of time together. Keep interactions calm, positive, and supervised.
If things get weird? No yelling, grabbing, or forcing interaction. Give everyone some space and try again later.
