If your dog growls, don’t reprimand them. Punishing them for communicating (growling) can lead them to skip the warning and go straight to biting. 🐾🐾🐾

Dog training tip of the day!

Socializing your dog properly doesn’t mean letting them meet every person and dog that wants to meet them.

Sometimes one bad experience is all it takes for your dog to become reactive to humans and/or dogs. There are a lot of things that humans do when meeting dogs that dogs find rude, including but not limited to:

1. Direct eye contact 🚩
2. Hovering over them, hugging them, or sticking their face in the dog’s face
3. Sticking a hand in their face or reaching over them
4. Walking directly towards them
5. Handling them too roughly/trying to roughhouse
6. Asking an uncomfortable dog to do tricks
7. Asking an uncomfortable dog to take treats directly from their hand
8. Teasing them with food/being overly familiar

Proper socialization means safely exposing your dog to new things and putting them in all sorts of situations so that they are comfortable and feel good or neutral about the things they face in every day life.

Instead of introducing your dog to everyone, instead let your dog people watch without direct contact with strangers. Give your dog treats as they observe calmly.

Chestnut aka Chessie is doing amazing in her foster home and is ready to find her forever home! This girl went from being petrified of humans to happily playing dress up for treats ❤️❤️❤️

Chessie is a middle-aged gal that is dog and cat friendly. She is a calmer girl herself, so would prefer a home with a medium-low energy doggy friend or as an only dog in a calm home.

She walks great on leash, loves her treatos, and is growing more confident every day thanks to her amazing foster parents Meagan Clawar and Cam ❤️

If you want a low maintenance, treat loving couch potato, Chessie may be your girl! She is adoptable through Second Chance Pet Adoptions.

She stayed with me for a while, so I’m happy to answer any questions about her 🐶

Meet Shadow 🐾! This sweet boy is up for adoption through . He is staying with us learning how to be a house dog and getting the exposure to the world that he missed as a young pup. He is such a sweet pup!

Daisy came to Dunkin’ Donuts for some socialization and exposure. The loud traffic was a little spooky so I let her sit on my lap to give her some comfort and a confidence boost. She proceeded to try to catch a fly, so I think it helped 😄

In a recent study we conducted with Dr. Sackman of , we found 86% of dogs who present with signs of hyperarousal (including jumping and grabbing hands and arms with hard biting, grabbing, and tearing clothing, jumping, lunging and barking, and knocking people over all with limited environmental stimulation; and/or inability to rest or relax) were improved or greatly improved when treated with a combination of an SSRI and clonidine. Please welcome Lola to our 3-week K-9 Training School Program! This sweet girl was rescued from a boxer rescue but is 100% American bulldog! She is a silly girl with lots of fun personality. She needs work on her listening skills, focus, and leash manners :)
