June is International Canine Megaesophagus Awareness Month, dedicated to educating pet owners about this condition, which affects a dog or cat’s esophagus, and promoting proper diagnosis and daily management techniques. Megaesophagus can be caused by a variety of things — some dogs are born with it and it can’t be reversed, while others develop it as a symptom of an underlying disease.

In Quill’s case, his megaesophagus was caused by acquired Myasthenia Gravis, and while we know his MG wasn’t genetic, we still don’t know exactly what triggered it. Thankfully, his MG medication fully resolved his megaesophagus, and I hope every day that it stays that way.

To help spread awareness, the Upright Canine Brigade - Megaesophagus Awareness and Support is hosting its annual Megaesophagus Calendar Contest, featuring dogs from around the world who live with this condition. It’s a beautiful way to honor these resilient pups and support the group that helped save Quill’s life and my sanity. Sales of the calendar benefit megaesophagus research.

• stop funding outdated animal experiments
• support modern, human‑relevant research methods
• prioritize alternatives anywhere they are possible
