Mellow is celebrating 300 days in foster care!

While it’s always a little sad for long-stay dogs to pass these milestones, we can only focus on the amazing and incredible fact that Mellow is alive and happy and loved.

Mellow came into our care in December when had red listed her after she was returned from an adopted family because their kids were playing too rough with her and rather than manage the kids, they decided to give up on Mellow.

Mellow happily settled into foster care thanks to stepping up for her and many other advocates, shelter volunteers and transporters working hard to get her out. Not long after she was in care though, her foster mom noticed some bumps on her chest and a vet visit revealed abnormal tissue that needed to be removed. Mellow survived not one but TWO full mammary chain removal surgeries caused by mastitis and many donors and supporters contributed toward her surgery. Despite some post-surgical complications including a tricky antibiotic-resistant infection, her foster mom made sure that she had the best access to care possible and today she is thriving, fully recovered and even learning new skills at training class!

We are so happy that Mellow is able to celebrate this milestone and cannot wait to celebrate the next one with her - the one where she’s adopted and settled into her forever home! We are asking all of our supporters to share sweet Mellow with everyone they know, to give her the forever home that we know she deserves! Quartz update!

Sweet baby Quartz was admitted to the emergency room on Friday night when his respiratory illness progressed from a doggy cold to full blown pneumonia as his fragile body was unable to fight off the URI.

For the next 48 hours it was touch and go as this tiny puppy, weighing less than 7lbs, was put on IVs, in an oxygen chamber and was unable to eat on his own.

Thanks to the incredible work of the team at - Quartz was back to breathing on his own with oxygen levels at 90%, which was enough to release him to rescue President so that he could begin recovering in the safety of his foster home.

While we are celebrating that Quartz made it out of the ER alive, we are also aware that he’s not fully out of the woods yet. Quartz is on two strong antibiotics to help him continue to fight this illness. He is separated fully from the resident dogs in his foster home for 2 weeks with strict quarantine protocols including PPE and thorough sanitization. He has follow-up radiographs in 5-7 days after which we will know how his teeny lungs have recovered from this pneumonia. Keep everything crossed that his lungs make a full recovery from this sickness.

We have raised approx $1,200 of the $3,700 total cost of Quartz’s ER visit. We will still have an anticipated $600-$800 for follow up diagnostics this coming week, bringing our total still needed to raise to $4,300-$4500 just for this sweet little pup. We appreciate every single cent donated by our supporters and encourage you all to continue sharing this amazing little fighter!

We’ve applied for several grants to help cover the cost of Quartz’s emergency care but unfortunately have not been approved for any that apply to this circumstance. We will continue working to raise funds so that all of the dogs in our care have the best chance at their healthy and happy forever, even when the worst possible scenario occurs.

Mazda, nka Stevie, is adopted!

Mazda was a favorite of volunteers and staff alike at the PG County animal shelter. When her pic appeared on the urgent list and a foster approached us with a request to save her, we couldn’t say no!

Stevie, as Mazda is now known, has been settling into her new home and loving life with her new doggy sister, Frankie and her their kitty best friend.

Congratulations to Stevie on her amazing new forever family! Big thanks to Stevie’s foster supporter volunteer Betsy, who went above and beyond for Stevie, from providing personal supplies for her needs to making sure she got cat tested before moving to her new home! We would not be celebrating this news without you Betsy!
