My 12-year-old Springer was not looking good on Friday and I called my Vet~ they said they couldn't give me an appointment until the next Wednesday
-
She stayed the same until Monday, late afternoon, then I saw a swift decline.
By 9PM she could not walk and was listless ~ so off to the ER 24/7 Vet Clinic in Lancaster PA.
-
After initial blood work, they discovered pancreatitis. Which can be deadly.
She was at the ER ICU unit for 8 days~ on IV meds and antibiotics.
-
I visited with her every day for 3-4 hours. I took my iPad and with Kiera on my lap, we watch TV on a couch in an examination room.
-
After 2 full days of eating home-cooked chicken, they took her off the iV and sent her home. I got an $8,000.00 bill and a list of her meds and how often to give them, Period.
-
Upon discharge, I was told, " all follow-up was to be done by my local vet".
-
Now I was entirely on my own.
-
By the 2nd day, she stopped eating and looked terrible. I called my local vet who was "swamped and didn't have time to review her chart from the ER VET"
-
It took me 5 hours of constant phone calls to the ER Vet to find a nurse to go over EACH med I was sent home with`- What it was and why we were using it.
-
HOW do you organize 9 different medications? some with food, some not with food. Some every 12 hours, some every 8 hours...?? I will show you How in this video.
-
The ER VET finally called in 2 more appetite and nausea meds which I picked up 15 minutes before the pharmacy closed.
-
The next day she would eat ribeye steak. The following day she wouldn't eat anything.
-
She continued Not to Eat and looked like a skeleton. If she didn't eat- she would die.
-
I had prior experience with hand "stuffing" show dogs ( to maintain good show weight)- so I broiled some ribeye steaks I had and a chicken thigh.... pulled all the fat out of them by letting them drain on paper towels.
-
Then I cut each into 3/4" square bites.
The rest you can see on the video.
-
Good luck to anyone who has a dog at home after surgery or a long illness~ they need you to recover fully
