The night it happened still replays in my mind like a movie I can’t turn off.
My partner, Police Dog Finn, had been by my side for seven years — loyal, fearless, my best friend. That night, when a knife flashed in the dark, Finn didn’t hesitate. He threw himself between me and danger — taking the blade meant for me.
The knife pierced his chest, missing his heart by centimeters. Even bleeding and broken, he held the suspect until help arrived. Only then did he collapse in my arms.
At the vet, I was told his chances were slim. But Finn wasn’t just a dog — he was a fighter. The first time his tail moved again, I knew: he was still in there, still fighting to stay.
He recovered slowly, each day stronger than the last. But what came next broke me — learning that under the law, Finn was considered nothing more than property. The man who stabbed him would face only minor charges.
That night, I made him a promise: “They’ll know who you are, partner. They’ll know what you did.”
And we fought again — this time, for justice. Together, with the help of thousands of supporters, we campaigned to change the law.
In 2019, we succeeded. Finn’s Law was passed, protecting service animals from harm and recognizing them as living, loyal beings — not property.
By the time the law was signed, Finn had retired. His fur was gray, his steps slower, but his eyes still burned with courage.
He passed peacefully in 2021, his head in my lap — the same way it had rested the night he saved my life.
Finn didn’t just protect me.
He changed the world for every service animal that came after him.
Because heroes like Finn don’t wear capes — they walk on four paws.
