Yesterday did not go as well as planned. I felt like Oscar was in a good head space when we started the course, but he got out there and kept looking towards the barns. He got 8s and 9s from the judges on the obstacles that we did complete, but unfortunately, we spent a lot of time just trying to do what I'd typically consider easy things for him at home and reached the time limit before completing the course. Overall, the judges were complimentary on the scoresheets, and I have no doubt that he would have easily done all of the obstacles if they'd been at home. We just need more mileage out and about.
Today, I have a far more mature RRP GRADUATE to hack around the horse park. He even stood by the jumper ring for half an hour with a back leg resting (those that know him know what a feat this is) while I watched a clinic.
This horse is one of the best athletes I've ever owned. This year has been about getting him healthy and teaching him to relax. I'd be lying to say I wasn't feeling sorry for myself yesterday but a bit of perspective has reminded just how much he's gained in a relatively short amount of time which is the goal of the Makeover.

Oscar and I spent the day hacking around the park. By the end of the ride, he was happy grazing anywhere in the park.
I feel fairly confident about the obstacles tomorrow but it's going to come down to whether I can slow his brain and body down enough to perform them well. He started off the day by getting anxious away from the other horses. By the end of the day, we were able to go anywhere at the Kentucky Horse Park by ourselves and added in some trotting and cantering.

Oscar spent the weekend cheering on his BFF, Gus, at Jumpstart HT and getting to hang out at the KHP as a final prep for the Makeover next week. We hacked miles over the weekend checking out the sights and took a lead from his extremely chill friend to show that being in this kind of environment isn't anything to be too excited about. Most of his strolling around was fairly relaxed but he was always eager to get back to the barn and spent some time in his stall on his hind legs trying to see what Gus was doing on the other side of the wall. I think it will work to our benefit not to have a buddy traveling to the Makeover.

We took to the trails early this morning (although it's important to remember that Carriage Hill doesn't open their gates until 8 am🤦‍♀️). He seemed quite happy in our new rope halter set-up, and he was very relaxed the entire time. I made a point to stop and "hang out" several times, which he wasn't too sure of at first but got better as we went.

We had a very fulfilling, educational day and I've returned home with a far more experienced horse this evening. The instructors were wonderful and the experience was everything that I hoped that it would be for Oscar.

Oscar is enjoying the green grass here at the Kentucky Horse Park for the Mounted Police civilian equine sensory training clinic. We'll have 3 sessions tomorrow and then, hopefully, travel home with a more confident horse. We took a nice stroll around the stabling and spent some relaxing time just taking in the gorgeous sights of the horse park.
