The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the first US cases of New World screwworm (NWS) in Texas and New Mexico. NWS is a serious pest that can affect livestock, pets, wildlife, and, in rare cases, people.

At this time, no additional detections have been reported. USDA and Texas animal health officials have launched an aggressive response aimed at containing and eradicating the pest.

According to Rhode Island State Veterinarian Dr. Scott Marshall, the risk to Rhode Island is currently considered low. The state receives relatively few livestock shipments from southern border states, and the pest is not expected to survive winter temperatures. However, Dr. Marshall notes that the most likely route of introduction into New England would be through an infested dog or cat, particularly rescue animals imported from southern states or directly from Mexico. Rhode Island veterinarians are encouraged to remain vigilant and consider NWS as a differential diagnosis when examining recently imported animals with suspicious wounds or lesions.

New World screwworm is a reportable disease. Veterinarians who suspect a case should contact the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management's Division of Agriculture and Animal Health for assistance with diagnosis and confirmation.

Additional information about New World screwworm is available at Screwworm.gov.

📣 Our clinic will be closing early at 6:00 PM today, May 8, so our team can attend the Stand Up For Animals Bingo Fundraiser!

Stand Up For Animals does so much for pets in our community through rescue efforts, adoptions, medical care, and helping local families navigate financial options for their pets health. We work closely with their team and are always grateful for the compassion, dedication, and second chances they provide to so many animals in need.

Supporting organizations like this means supporting the health and well-being of pets both inside and outside the clinic walls, and we’re proud to spend the evening helping raise funds for such an important cause.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support - we’ll resume normal business hours tomorrow!
