🐾 5 Signs Your Dog May Be Losing Muscle Mass

Muscle loss doesn't just happen in senior dogs. We often see it in dogs recovering from injury, dealing with arthritis, experiencing pain, or becoming less active.

Look out for:

1️⃣ Hind legs looking thinner than they used to

2️⃣ Difficulty getting up from lying down

3️⃣ Struggling with stairs or jumping into the car

4️⃣ Becoming tired more quickly on walks

5️⃣ A more prominent spine, hips or shoulders

⚠️ If you notice muscle loss, don't assume it's simply due to age. Muscle wasting can be a sign of an underlying medical condition that requires veterinary attention.

We always recommend booking an appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible so they can identify the cause and discuss appropriate treatment options.

Once any underlying issues have been investigated, a tailored exercise, nutrition and wellness plan can help support strength, mobility and quality of life.

Have you noticed any of these signs in your dog?

On Monday, we had to say goodbye to our beautiful boy, Sam.

He was 16 years old, and although I knew this day would come eventually, nothing really prepares you for it.

This week has been a blur of tears, guilt, relief, sadness, gratitude and memories. One minute I'm looking at photos and smiling, the next I'm full on crying again.

There is a hole in our hearts.

For so many years, Sam was simply part of everything. He was there through family milestones, business milestones, good days, bad days and all the ordinary moments in between.

One of the hardest parts has been questioning whether we made the right decision, even though deep down we know we did. As dog owners, we carry the responsibility of making that final choice for them, and it is a burden that comes from a place of love.

What brings me comfort is knowing that Sam didn't know fear, or guilt, or heartbreak. He only knew that he was loved. And now im crying again.......

And he was loved deeply.

Right now, I'm trying to be kind to myself and allow myself to grieve. Not rush it. Not hide from it. Just take it one day at a time.

If you've lost a dog, you'll understand that they leave pawprints on your heart that never really fade.

Thank you for 16 wonderful years, Sam. ❤️🐾

I miss you more than words can say.

A new chapter for Scuba Sam's 🐾

While our physical location has now closed as we prepare for our move back to the UK, our passion for helping dogs live longer, healthier and more comfortable lives hasn't changed.

Over the last few years we've had the privilege of working with hundreds of incredible dogs and their families. We've learned so much along the way, and we'd love to continue sharing that knowledge.

This page isn't going anywhere. Instead, we'll be using it to share practical advice on canine wellness, mobility, exercise, weight management, nutrition and healthy ageing.

We'll also continue sharing resources, products and programmes that we genuinely trust and believe can help dogs thrive.

Thank you for being part of the Scuba Sam's journey so far. We're excited to see where this next chapter takes us.

What topics would you like us to cover? 🐾

It’s with really heavy hearts that Sean and I share that Scuba Sam’s will unfortunately be closing its doors as we prepare for our move back to the UK over the coming weeks.

This business, our clients and your dogs have meant absolutely everything to us over the years, and making this decision has been incredibly difficult.

We are incredibly proud of what Scuba Sam’s became — from helping post-op dogs walk again, supporting senior dogs with comfort and mobility, working alongside veterinary practices, and building relationships with so many wonderful owners and their pets.

One thing that has been very important to us throughout this process is making sure our clients continue to have access to quality rehabilitation support and hydrotherapy care locally. Over the past 8 months we have been working closely alongside another facility, sharing techniques and knowledge around our approach to underwater treadmill work and hydrotherapy, and we feel confident recommending them moving forward for ongoing care.

We will share more details regarding this shortly, along with information about final appointments and next steps.

Thank you for trusting us with your dogs, supporting our small business, cheering us on, and allowing us to be part of your dogs’ journeys. Scuba Sam’s will always hold a huge place in our hearts. ❤️
