UPDATE 10/28/2026 - From Dr. Ursula Nance
Dear citizens of Greenup County-
Just a quick (maybe long lol) update for those who are interested:
We are still under medical isolation to complete and speed the treatment for the animals in the faciilty! I have done several walk throughs during this time (1 week now) and started many protocol changes to date. I do believe it is certainly it is in the best interests for all of the animals at this time - but don't worry!!! there is light at the end of the tunnel!!! (YAY!!!!)
Treatment is going soooo well thanks to the staff following treatment protocols and administering all the medicines, DVM monitoring (popping in and out to check on them at random times) and the isolation to stop spreading and possible contamination (thank you everyone ). I am happy to report that the animals are all doing great (I have been checking on them and was out on site just yesterday with my team).
I am still limiting the visitors to the kennel area, but still encouraging walking the dogs - only 2 at a time - and some new rules for the volunteers such as cleaning their hands before and after the walks, and signing a volunteer waiver. Everyone has been super happy to follow the new rules and for that we thank you.
The response in the animals so far has been improved bowels movements, improved appetites and body condition’s - all of them are so full they are leaving food in their bowls. I think they are all also enjoying their regular bathing (but I am sure getting a long term home would be MUCH better lol). Don't worry! I am releasing them from quarantine and reopening the kennel very soon!!!! (STAY TUNED).
In the meantime we are still asking for some patience, and trust during the treatment period. Like I stated above, any volunteers coming out to walk will be asked to sign in as usual, and sign a volunteer agreement on arrival.
My team and I are in and out on a regular basis, and the staff at the shelter are following my recommendations to a tee!
In addition to medications - everyone has been vaccinated against rabies, and Distemper / Parvo, and all animals have received a prescription flea and tick medication. Most are scheduled for their spaying and neutering as soon as they are better and cleared for adoption.
In addition to the current residents at the shelter, 2 animals have been removed from the shelter environment for additional more specific care for other conditions and are also doing great.
Thanks to Friends of Greenup Paws, The Greenup County Fiscal Court, One by one animal advocates, and AARF for their support.
Yours sincerely,
Ursula Nance DVM
