Fall manure pumping is routine in swine production, but the risks are anything but routine.
Agitating manure can release deadly concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) in seconds. And here's the danger: You cannot rely on your sense of smell to detect it.
Before pumping begins:
✅ VENTILATE — Maintain proper airflow.
✅ MONITOR — Check hazardous gas levels.
✅ CLEAR THE AREA — Keep people and pigs away from danger.
✅ BE PREPARED — Have an emergency plan. Never attempt an unprotected rescue.

Weaning doesn't have to mean an abrupt separation. Fence line weaning allows calves to maintain sight, sound, and limited physical contact with their mothers while adjusting to life without nursing.

Reducing stress during this transition can help support feed intake, calf health, and a smoother start to the next production phase.

Cold nights can quickly turn a promising sorghum crop into a potential nitrate risk.

Profectus rep Devin Stricherz shows how he pulls a sorghum sample to test for nitrate levels and nutrient value. He goes straight for the bottom third of the stalk, because that’s where nitrates build up the most. Testing that section shows you the worst-case level in your field before it ever reaches your cattle.
