The Roanoke Foodshed Network, the Virginia Association for Biological Farming, and Partners present our May Farm Tour with Lazy Pigg Farm!

Monday, May 19 · 3:00-6:00pm · Ferrum, Virginia

The Lazy Pigg Farm is a multigenerational farm on 45 acres in Franklin County, Virginia. It was originally a dairy farm, but Dana and Sean Lydon raise Dexter cattle, Katahdin sheep and laying hens. They practice managed intensive rotational grazing to improve soil health and to leave the land better than they found it. In April 2023 they installed five acres of silvopasture. This will provide shade for the animals, as well as fence posts, nuts, and willow for additional forage. The Lydons are also starting woody perennials and perennial flowers to sell through the Blue Ridge Flower Exchange.

For more information, contact Becki DeRusseau at [email protected]. Detailed directions will be shared with registrants.

Did you know? Close to 30% of USDA employees have been or are at risk of being fired. This massive reduction in capacity will result in delays for all farmers accessing all USDA programs, exacerbate administrative bottlenecks, and make USDA resources even harder to deliver across the country.

Please email your member of Congress and ask them to urge Secretary Rollins to stop all the firings of USDA employees and fully staff all local offices today: https://secure.everyaction.com/xUgaSWL8uUO0PyBgvzCuuQ2

From National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition
Congress made $20 billion available for farmers to help recover from those impacts.

Despite the widespread need to access this relief, USDA is poised to offer a streamlined path to these funds only for farms who are already enrolled in crop insurance and commodity programs – which could leave out thousands of hard-working farmers and ranchers, especially smaller, local and non-monoculture farms!

Add your name and tell the USDA how your farm or farms in your community have been impacted by natural disasters and why you need federal support.

Then, share the form with your community to help us reach our goal of 500 farmers standing together.

Happy ! What better way to celebrate than by supporting farmers invest in soil health and clean water - ask your Members of Congress to cosponsor the Agriculture Resilience Act (ARA).

In the last few months, we’ve seen brazen attacks on climate and environmental stewardship programs despite their clear benefits for farmers and communities.

The reality is that farmers are not only on the front lines of volatile weather events but also among the most significant stewards of our nation’s water, soil, and air quality. To ensure our ability to grow food into the future, we must resource farmers with the knowledge and support they need to weather any storm. That’s why we support the introduction of the Agriculture Resilience Act – a farmer-centered bill that incentivizes and supports the work family farmers are doing to build soil health, improve water quality, build robust and resilient businesses, and feed our communities.

Tell Rollins to Restore Funding for LFPA! https://secure.everyaction.com/OQip4txA9U-Hc511egG0xw2

The USDA announced the termination of over $1 billion in previously announced 2025 funding for LFPA and LFS, the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program and Local Food for Schools Program.

Your members of Congress have the power to create permanent versions of these programs that farmers and communities can depend on through the farm bill, but we need your help to build broad, bipartisan support!

📢 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀

Did you know that for the last several years, farmers, schools, and food distributors have been working together to serve fresh, local food in schools and food pantries across the nation?

Until a few weeks ago, the Local Food Purchase Assistance Program (LFPA) and Local Food for Schools Program (LFS) at USDA were doing just that. Both programs were working to build stronger local supply chains and promote market access for smaller scale and historically underserved farmers and ranchers at the same time.

Despite the programs’ wide success with farmers and families, on Friday, March 7, the USDA announced the termination of over $1 billion in previously announced 2025 funding for LFPA and LFS. The loss of these investments will have lasting effects on local food networks. Farmers depend on these contracts, as many of them shifted their businesses to accommodate the new demand, and food banks and local schools will lose out on high quality local produce.

Your members of Congress have the power to create permanent versions of these programs that farmers and communities can depend on through the farm bill, but we need your help to build broad, bipartisan support!

Can you take a moment to email your legislators and ask them to support making LFPA and LFSCC funding permanent through the Farm Bill?
