The Story of Boogie, Chapter 8

Not long after Boogie began lapping up nutrition on his own, his esophageal port became infected. We managed it for a period of time with antibiotics but eventually we knew we needed to remove it. Our options were to remove it and replace it (which would require another surgery for Boogie), or remove it and see how Boogie managed “eating” on his own. We weren’t quite prepared to remove it this soon as Boogie wasn’t fully proficient eating on his own. He’d need to be able to eat quite a bit of food on his own to maintain his health. But, he was improving each day. We decided to take a gamble for at least a few days to see how he did without his feeding tube. If he couldn’t maintain his weight, we’d have to place a new esophageal tube.

From that point on, the staff worked hard to feed Boogie around the clock. It was a much longer process to syringe feed him by mouth than it was to tube feed him because it required Boogie being willing to eat! No one worked harder with Boogie than our practice manager, Sam. She found the easiest way to get him to eat was to spoon feed him, so spoon feed him she did. Even if that meant doing so while Boogie lounged in her chair, while she spoon fed him from the floor. This boy had us wrapped around his little paws, and we couldn’t care less. 💝

The Story of Boogie, Chapter 7

It was Monday morning and Boogie had spent the weekend at our practice manager’s house. He had made HUGE progress over there. He had used the litter box!! Sam had worked with him all weekend getting used to his litter box, and knowing where his box was. From that point forward, his litter box issues were solved and we were one step closer to a more independent and happy cat!

Next up was to get Boogie eating on his own. He was still being fed through his esophageal tube and while these can stay in for several months, it was best for Boogie to eat independently. We started with syringe feeding him a liquified meal. He couldn’t smell it or find it on his own, but if we brought it to his lips, he licked away! Another huge step for our little fighter. We’d continue to feed him through his port while we got him used to lapping up his food. He was still regaining proper function of his mouth and tongue and couldn’t eat well enough to get all of his nutrition this way. And boy did he create a mess at mealtime😂. But to see him eating for the very first time was a miraculous feeling. How far our friend had come in such a short period of time.

The Story of Boogie, Chapter 6

Our little man just kept on going, day after day. For the first 2 weeks, he mostly sat in his kennel quietly, and came to the front of the cage when he had visitors. He was polite and friendly, and a superb tenant for the most part. We enjoyed his company, and he enjoyed ours.

However, our little kitty had not used his litter box for 2 weeks. He was going to the bathroom, but he would go in his bed, where he slept. The more time that passed, the more concerned we became. We knew Boogie would have an incredibly hard time finding a home not only because of his ongoing medical care, but also if he was unable or unwilling to use a litter box. We knew it would be would be unfair to keep Boogie in a cage for the rest of his life.

Exactly 2 weeks in, our team came together to discuss these tough topics surrounding Boogie’s future. There were concerns that his progress had stalled, and that he may never regain the ability to eat on his own, use a litter box, or have the ability to have a good quality of life and be a happy cat. We discussed the dreaded “e” word - euthanasia. Every single one of us wanted to save Boogie more than anything, but we also knew we needed to be fair and make sure he could have a good quality of life, not just keep him alive because we could.

During our discussion, we got him out and let him walk the clinic for the first time. We watched his silent confidence and his little cat swagger. He trotted towards our voices and swished between our legs. This little cat had come so far, we just couldn’t give up on him quite yet.

It was a Friday, so Sam, our practice manager, packed him up and took him home for the weekend, determined to work on his litter box training. We decided our little friend deserved more time to heal.

The Story of Boogie, Chapter 5

It took several weeks for Boogie’s facial swelling to fully subside. We waited patiently so we could assess which injuries would heal and which ones wouldn’t. We wanted to see which functions Boogie would regain, and which ones he wouldn’t.

With the damage to his nasal passages, he sneezed. A lot. He was so kind to always leave us a nice mess to clean up after he’d had a good sneezing fit. It was in these moments that he was affectionately given the name “Boogie”.

He had significant damage to his eyes. The internal structures of both eyes were damaged, and he had ulcers on the surface of his eyes. We treated his eyes day in and day out for weeks. Boogie is one of the most tolerant and sweetest cats you’ll meet, but one thing he does not like is anyone going near his eyes. We can’t blame him though, those eyes were ouchy!

It took some time for Boogie to be able to close his mouth and regain proper function of his tongue. More on this later. While he tolerated his tube feedings, we knew if Boogie were to have any quality of life, he’d need to be able to eat on his own.
