We do not recommend feeding raw diets and this is one of the very many reasons why.

The FDA has issued a safety advisory for certain lots of Raaw Energy raw dog food after testing positive for harmful pathogens, including Listeria, Salmonella, and E. coli. These products have been linked to a reported dog illness in Connecticut.

Veterinarians and pet owners are encouraged to review affected lots and avoid feeding these products. More information is available on the FDA website.

Patient Spotlight: Meet Boo! She is a Pomeranian that weighs in at a whopping 4.1 pounds! Boo lives in New Jersey and her owners drove all the way to Peake Brook to get her spayed here! Boo's owners are related to Peake Brook clients who have tiny dogs and they recommended that Dr. Gwenn perform her spay. Boo did great in surgery and recovered very well! Mom stated that the following day she acted like nothing happened! We are so happy to have had the privilege to meet her!

At Peake Brook we take care of all sizes of dogs and cats; from the tiniest like Boo to our record holder Mastiff at 232 pounds!

01/23/2026

We will be closed for routine business on Monday 1/26 due to the storm. Dr. Gwenn will be at or very near the clinic if emergencies arise. Please FB message this page should an emergency arise and we will be in touch as soon as we can. Our current plan is to open for normal business on Tuesday. Please monitor this page for updates. Stay safe.

Patient Spotlight:

Meet Smida! Smida is a 3 year old Standard Poodle. As the pick of the litter from the 2019 Westminster Best-in-Show winning mom, Siba, motherhood was always a ‘hoped for’ part of the plan. But first, Smida needed to earn her own AKC Championship, and complete a battery of health testing. Once completed, it was determined that she was genetically, conformationally and temperamentally worthy carry to on her mother’s legacy.

We are proud to partner with many local, ethical breeders who try hard to do things right. They maintain their dogs in good physical health, keep them up-to-date on vaccines, monitor heat cycles, check progesterone levels to determine optimal breeding dates, come in around day 28 of gestation for an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy and again during the last week of pregnancy for an X-Ray to do a puppy count. The breeder Smida is with does all of those things, and still … sometimes our partnership involves a little bit more. When Smida first went into labor, things were going well and progressing normally. The first two puppies arrived happy and healthy. After delivering the first two pups, her progress stalled, despite getting an oral calcium supplement to help produce strong contractions. At this point, her breeder again checked in with Dr. Gwenn. Knowing there is a risk of using drugs to stimulate contractions without being sure there is a clear path out for the puppy, we had Smida come in for an X-Ray. After confirming the puppy should be able to pass, we gave her a little oxytocin to get things moving. Smida and her breeder were set up in a procedure room and we let nature take its course … with the benefit of our veterinary technology and equipment to keep things warm, safe and comfortable for momma and her new babies! We were very excited to welcome seven beautiful Standard Poodle puppies; 2 black females, 4 black males and 1 cream male.
At Peake Brook, we value our dog-breeding colleagues who work hard to ensure the puppies they produce are from strong, healthy bloodlines. We value their commitment to breed preservation, and we are here to help! ❤️

Patient Spotlight! Meet Pepper. She is a 110 pound, 8.5-year-old St. Bernard that was referred to Peake Brook in mid December for emergency surgery. Pepper presented to her veterinarian after not feeling well for a few days. She was lethargic and did not want to eat. Pepper was drinking much more water than normal. Her owner also noticed that she was frequently licking her v***a and that she had quite a bit of vaginal discharge. Pepper had been in heat about six weeks prior to this. Pepper’s veterinarian determined that she had a severe uterine infection called a pyometra and needed immediate surgery. A pyometra is a life-threatening condition that typically happens 4-8 weeks following a female dog’s heat cycle. During the heat cycle, bacteria invade the uterus and cause the uterus to fill up with pus. Pepper was fortunate in that her cervix remained open and the pus was able to drain, preventing her infected uterus from rupturing into her abdomen. Pepper underwent a successful spay to remove her ovaries and her infected uterus. She was placed on antibiotics and has made a full recovery. Pyometra is one of the many reasons we recommend spaying female dogs. In general, it is recommended that we spay female dogs when they are 6-12 months of age for small to medium breeds and 18-24 months in giant breed dogs. If you have an adult female dog that is not spayed, please call us today to get that procedure scheduled! Pepper was fortunate to have made a full recovery, but not all dogs with this condition are as fortunate. We want all of our patients to lead, happy, healthy, long lives and getting them spayed is one way we can help this happen.

Meet Milo. He’s got quite the story to tell! Milo came to the clinic yesterday with a lovely couple. They found Milo and brought him in thinking he was just a stray kitty in need of a loving home. Dr. Middleton scanned him for a microchip as part of his exam. He had a microchip and she traced the microchip to his registered owner. As it turns out, Milo went missing in May and his heartbroken owners had been looking for him since. His owners had moved to a new home and Milo pushed a screen out and left the house. His heartbroken owners posted his picture on Facebook, but he was not found until yesterday! This is a testament to why all pets should be microchipped. There are hundreds of ways animals can get out of the house or get separated from you. The microchip was the only reason he was able to be returned to his rightful owners. His family was so excited to see him again! Please get your pets microchipped. It’s so very important. For a one time fee of approximately $60, your pet can get microchipped and give you the best possible chance of a happy reunion in the event they are separated from you. Here’s a partial list of ways animals can be separated from you; car accident, house fire, repair people or family accidentally letting them out of the house, etc. Please consider microchipping. As veterinarians, we want to see more happy endings like this one!
