Last weekend, we came out to work with the amazing Team of Sunrise Service Dogs to focus on building their taskwork portfolio.

It was a great time, with lots of positive discussion and an openness to new ideas.

⭐️ Presenting Feathers End Flying Through The Water "Gypsy" (formerly "Penguin") BN CGCA CGCU ⭐️

It was a great day for Gypsy, as she managed to qualify for her third leg of her AKC Beginner Novice Obedience title - and with a 2nd placement!

So what does this mean for a Service Dog in Training?

Considering this is Gypsy's fourth working title, we can be assured about a few things; including her drive to work as a teammate, her stability across multiple environments, and her ability to ignore major distractions while readily obeying commands from her Handler.

Although the exercises in AKC Beginner Novice are ones that all Service Dogs should know how to do, the title behind Gypsy's name represents that she can also perform these behaviors under the meticulous scoring of an AKC Obedience Judge - with no rewards, training collars, or corrections; and under a single command.

Thank you, BARK Institute for the opportunity to work with your amazing team, as well as share some new ideas and approaches to Service Dog raising and training.

Here's Rescue 22 Service Dog, Gambit solving the puzzle of placing a sock inside a box using our Free Shaping method. Such a clever boy!

It's such a useful skill for Service Dogs in Training to learn how to independently problem solve, and an equally incredible skill for us as Trainers - as it teaches us so much about who the dogs are as individuals, where their true understanding of the task lays, and provides us with valuable insight in how to read them in the moment.

I will always value colleagues who share a constant hunger toward learning more. Many Tainers in our industry are constantly picking up new techniques, thus driving results and increasing the industry's overall talent. Dog Training, as a whole has been in constant change and discovery for decades, and will likely continue to be so.

Those who stand out from the competition will continue to be the Trainers who refuse to stay stagnant, aren't afraid to step outside of the box, and whose experience shines across the industry. Knowledge, especially when it comes to it being used toward something as important as training Service Dogs to change peoples' lives should never be guarded nor kept secret - not when we are truly vested in why we do what we do.
