I know as vet staff our job is to pester those of you dog lovers about heartworms and heartworm preventatives. If you arenât one of the few people who gets to work at a veterinary clinic and experience real life cases, you might not realize how important these particular conversations are! Below are X-rays we took of a dogâs chest yesterday. The dog came in for a normal vaccination appointment, and we recommended a heartworm and tick disease screening test. The test was positive for the heartworm antigen, so we recommended x-rays. If you take a look at the upper pictures, there is enlargement of the heart and pulmonary (lung) vessels, as well as a lot of inflammation and disease in the lung fields. There are normal dog radiographs pictured (lower) in this post as well, for comparison. Heartworm disease is treatable, but itâs a long and intensive process, and the heart and lung damage the worms cause is sometimes irreversible. If you have any questions about heartworm disease, please call us!
