Dusty's Page

Dusty's Page Dusty became a community hound when something scared him out of our fence on July 15, 2020 at about 7:45 am. Here is his story and well-doings.

We finally were able to catch Dusty in a live trap entering into the SIXTEENTH night of his absence.

Saturday Day 4
Evening
7:30 pm our adrenaline started to pump. Kelli and her family spotted Dusty in the apartments east of the soccer fields. I whipped around from where I was, and called Jadyn, who was in the truck with my dad. Mom texted my aunt.
Once we got to Kelli, she said that Dusty darted into the roads of the apartments and her husband was on foot. I told her to stay and case where she had seen him, we were going to go on the opposite side.
As we were just about to the end of the apartments on the other side, when a girl slowed to tell us there was a dog spotted just a head on Washington St. (Apparently, we had a look about us.)
I told my mom to get the quilt ready and to trust me. We saw him. Oh man, he lost weight, and it was like we could see circles under his eyes. His tongue was hanging out so far. My stomach just sank, I needed to get him to a safe place. I threw my hazard lights on as there was a little traffic coming. I was able to herd Dusty for a bit with my mom hanging the quilt out the window. She kept wanting to get out, but I knew that would slow us so much! If there was not such a big ditch off the shoulder, we probably could have thrown the quilt and had him. Unfortunately, he finally saw the highline trail behind Mid-State Technical College and ran.
I care far more about animals than I do cars, so I took my practically new Cruze down the ditch and up the highlines for a bit. I knew it was not safe to go any further because I would have totally wrecked my car or gotten stuck.
We met up with my dad and uncle; we switched partners and some of us shoes. I knew Dusty would not really leave the path of the highlines, because he did not care for the woods any other time. My parents split off to go around to the other side of the highlines; my mom walked north on that path. My aunt and uncle sat at that north spot where we last saw Dusty. Kelli and us met at the back of MSTC. The three of them stood on the pavement, her husband had just seen Dusty among the equipment. Jadyn and I took to the opposite side of the highlines to push Dusty out and into Kelli’s family.
My mom had reached us just as we heard everyone yell from the parking lot. Jadyn and I took off, we are SO out of shape, towards them; him with the catch pole and me with the quilt. Dusty just raced past all of them towards Washington St again.
We did not say much, we all kind of knew. Dad waited for Mom. Kelli followed me. And I raced towards 32nd St again. I was extremely thankful I had just gotten the automatic Cruze. This is the moment that we started on that thin orange line that can be seen on the map. It was just about dark, maybe 9/9:15 pm.
With my hazard lights on again and Kelli following me very carefully, we herded Dusty the entire time. I KNOW that was not right p***e, but we were desperately trying to “net” Dusty. Because of the curbs in town I could not get Jadyn close enough. I was afraid of catching a tire to the curb and sending us whirling. That would have probably made matters worse.
At one-point Dusty ran behind the elementary school. My mom and dad stayed on that side and walked from that corner in. Jadyn and I headed all the way around to the soccer field fences. Besides the epic chase we were just in, we had high hopes that if we closed all the walk-in gates that we might be able to corner Dusty inside.
We circled and circled, but no luck. When we went back to check in with my parents, a couple of girls on bikes said Dusty took off behind a different set of apartments.
Jadyn and I, along with Kelli, followed Dusty to a house under construction with woods behind it. I saw him slow down and walk behind the house. We had to try. Remember I said we were out of shape… oh gosh! The yard was all that hard construction sand with huge tractor groves. I went left around the house, Jadyn went right. I saw Dusty attempt to climb the hill to the trees behind the house, but it was too much for him. He went towards Jadyn, but after turning around and seeing me, turned round again, and ran at Jadyn. It looked like Jadyn dove with the quilt at Dusty, and missed him by an inch. Without hesitation, Jadyn was back up. We both ran back to the car, huffing and puffing of course, and I made sure he was okay. Kelli was a stellar driver, too. They followed Dusty while we climbed back into the car.
Another couple of tight turns and nearly loosing Dusty, we followed him into Building Blocks parking lot.
OH MY GOSH. Dusty went straight to their double doors, and sat down. Exhausted. Defeated. I was nearly crying.
I whip in front of him and Kelli behind me. We all got out of the cars quietly and slowly. My hands were low but up so he could see them. He looked so bedraggled. My heart was throbbing in my ears. We all were five feet away from him. Without a second thought he sprinted between Kelli and me. I knew we were done for the night at that moment.
Both guys chased Dusty to the grass and into the blackness of the driveway. I did not want them to chase him into the road of HWY 54, so they stopped. I was numb.
10:30 pm we checked the backyards of those surrounded the driveway of Building Blocks. My aunt and uncle drive up and down HWY 54 to make sure he did not cross. Kelli cased the storage garages. We were at a lost.
Jadyn and I went back home for a bowl of water and food to leave in the corner of the storage garages, just behind someone’s backyard.
12:20 am we fell into bed.

Saturday Day 4
Afternoon
This sighting behind Washington Elementary was our last one for nearly the day. At 1:00 pm we broke for lunch. As soon as we finished eating, we headed back out. I was so very anxious to get him with the heat index being almost 100. We circled areas of water and shade. I prayed and prayed that he was smart enough to just find shade and water and be still. The large orange area highlighted on the map is what we drove between four vehicles until about 4/4:30 pm.
It was way too hot and we were being foolish for stressing ourselves out when we all knew that he was not running in the heat. His pattern had been dusk after early morning exploring. We headed home to our own dogs for a few hours.
I could not sit still though. Dusty was outside in Wisconsin humidity while we were in the A/C having water and pizza. Finally, my mom and I ventured out at 6:30ish in my car. Kelli and her family were back out searching as well. After kitchen clean up, my husband, dad, uncle, and aunt joined the hunt in two more vehicles.

Saturday
Morning
We get up early to check our food station and Dusty’s frequented locations, but no sightings or food missing. Jadyn and I were very worried with the heat coming in that day, and no reports on Dusty.
By 7:20-7:40 we finally had a few people see Dusty in their neighborhood. We were all over that area just looking for him. We would call his name only to stir him in case he was laying idle in a backyard. However, the area he was spotted in was probably four to five miles north from where he was the first three days!
Between 8 & 8:30 am Dusty was reported two to three miles east now. We spent the next three hours combing this area; talking to EVERYONE that was outside. My sister and her boyfriend joined by now, so we had three vehicles out. Friends of ours even came out by 10ish. As did complete strangers that were also fosters with the same rescue as ours. I messaged her through Facebook, and they were/are blessings!

By Friday evening (Day 3)... the sightings of Dusty were getting fewer and much fewer.
Jadyn and I spent three plus hours going over every area he was seen. And we were ready to spend hours trying to get Dusty caught!
Leggins, check. Tennis shoes, check. Cooling headband, check. Catch pole, check. Slip lead, check. Water, check. Comforter to use as a net, check.
We saw him. Once. Briefly. For not even. One second.
Despair! Stress! Our poor dogs have been left alone now for three days and night. They were acting out and starving for attention.
We set up Thumper's kennel on the opposite corner where the food was laid out, with more food, and her comforter and string leading from the door to the road...
It was the weekend, and we could spend all day and night trying to get this dog back to safety.
At this point we did not think he was very car savvy.

Morning
Dusty spent the night on the porch of the house on the corner of Grove Ave and 27th St S until the husband came home from work at 6:15 am.
I went back to that area to check the food. None of it was gone, but a bunch of slugs had found their way into and on to the dish. After peeling them off, I drove around the block. And there he was. Standing. Staring at me from the side of the garage. At this point, I had not seen the note about him being on this person's porch, sleeping. I spent a good 15 - 20 minutes herding Dusty while in my car around this block. If I had Jadyn in the passenger seat holding the homemade catch pole he made, we would have had him! I just could not navigate the car and reach him at the same time. Ugh!

Day 3

HAVE YOU SEEN ME? Please catch me.

Dusty is still not back home. He is favoring houses between Piney Ave, 27th St S, and Grove Ave. Sometimes 2200 Airport Ave. We have a kennel trap set up with a blank and food on the inside corner of Piney and Grove Ave.
Our thoughts is he might have been abused prior to his trip to WI, so he runs away from his name. In order to bring him home, we are either going to have to corner him or basically lasso him. I know this sounds bad, but I need him home safe by any means possible. Once home he can de-stress there.

We will be out in cars and on foot again this even, if anyone cares to help corner him.

DAY 3 Still gone!

HAVE YOU SEEN ME?
Dusty is a 1-2 year-old shepherd/walker c**n mix. Last seen 7:45 am in our back yard behind Gowey & Abstarts Title this morning. He is VERY shy, so I expect him to be hiding under a porch/camper or something rather than running. He is approachable, but not food motivated. His collar has my information on it or please contact the SWCHS. I believe something scared him this morning and he rushed our chain link fence.

Evening
Dusty was seen around Pine Ave/Grove Ave and 21st Place S several of times.
My parents came in their truck and Jadyn and I in my car. We circled and circled this area. In fact, I felt we had somewhat became family as I knew the names of nearly everyone on the corners.
We all ate Culver's in the driveway of a house that does not have any tenants, because we had seen Dusty come out of the woods here twice this evening.
At dusk, Dusty was seen once more at this house, but crossed the street north again by Piney Ave and Airport. My parents spot him just before me. Mom jumps out of the truck to try to leash him, but this dog is SO FAST! Even after not really eating, and who knows about water! His tongue was hanging so low.
I KNOW chasing a dog is NOT something you should do, however, we had no idea how to get a hold of Dusty. I follow him in my car thinking to tire him out and corner him in a backyard.
Night is creeping up too fast though, and we lose him.
We all sat in the truck with headlights beaming on a dish of wet dog food on a corner. Low and behold, Dusty sneaks out from the opposite corner towards the food. I slowly creep out of the truck with my slip lead and keep to the shadows of my car. Another truck was pulling up next to my dad to talk about the dog that is right in front of me. I was very close to him, but their voices spooked him and he was gone into the darkness.

We left a blanket and food there that night, in the corner he came out of.

Day 2

HAVE YOU SEEN ME?
Dusty is still not back home. He is not a hider like I thought, but rather hide from humans. We were trailing him from 5:30 until 11 last night around the X Country Ski trails and the houses between Piney Ave, 21st Pl S, and Grove Ave. That is where we set out a blanket and food for the night.
Our thoughts is he might have been abused prior to his trip to WI, so he runs away from his name. In order to bring him home, we are either going to have to corner him or basically lasso him. : / He deserves love like any other fur baby.

Wednesday, July 15, 2020
Dusty was spotted a couple of times during the day and my dad followed those leads. He was a huge help in searching and keeping my sanity.
Thumper dug her way out underneath our fence the day after we brought her home. She had most likely been a stray nearly her whole life, and was EXTREMELY apprehensive of people! She had spent the night on the main floor her first night in between the spare bed and wall at the time. We had to herd her into the house finally at bedtime, after she had been in the yard for at least 8 hours. Thumper kept to a two to three mile radius of the house for 9 hours (I spent my last day of vacation searching and following leads of her. She was untouchable.). She crossed the two busiest roads in our town several of times, both four lanes across. At 6 pm she walked through the gate to where my husband was holding a dish of food I set out for her. She never tried to get out again. In fact, we rarely use a leash on her now, because even if she goes to the neighbors to say hi to their fur babies, she comes right back.
I was praying that this would be another Thumper repeat with Dusty. I had left out water, kibble, and tuna for him, but nothing.
Once my husband, Jadyn, came home, we went back out together searching the streets and backyards of everywhere.
Finally we had a solid lead of him. We had another couple of ladies in the community out with leashes and treats, and we all were so very close to gabbing him. My husband was an inch away for getting the lead around Dusty when a bicyclist continued his ride right between them. F YOU! (Sorry, but that was so rude!!) After that, we lost Dusty for the night... I knew we would not be getting him back home that night.
Devastated, I contacted the president of the rescue to notify her. I had done so immediately when Thump ran away, and was told that it happens, contact Lost Dogs of WI and the humane society. When I finally received a response about Dusty, I was scolded about not CALLING her right away and to keep her posted. Uh.... One, it was not what I had received about Thumper. Two, I reached out at least as soon as I knew we were not getting him back for the night, ya know, like Thumper just walking back. And three, that is all? What do I do to catch a dog that does not want to be caught?

7:45 pm
I let Thumper and Dusty outside from the upstairs door. No sooner than getting to the main level after retrieving my phone, did I hear Thumper cry (she is brilliant). My heart stopped, because that was not a good, playful cry. I walk outside to find Thumper looking down the driveway, to me, and back to the driveway.
No, no, no.... We cannot be 3 and 1 for fosters getting out! Dusty was not in the driveway... so I searched behind the garage and on the side of the house and up on the deck. No way!!!
My heart was racing, because we had no attachment to Dusty, he was VERY SHY, food was not important to him (he ate MAYBE a quarter of a cup of kibble in the three days we had him, and he was not motivated by other dogs. By our experience with him, I thought he would be hiding underneath something. I called into work after consulting my voice or reason, aka my mother, put a bra on and went back to the streets. My dad came into town so we searched for another two hours.
The SWCHS and non-emergency police number was contacted and posts were made. I went to work, terrified for being such an idiot!
