💚 Our team pours into the pets and people who need us most every single day, so Mental Health Awareness Month served as a reminder to pour back into themselves.

Throughout May, we focused on gratitude, nervous system health, movement, purpose, connection, and overall wellbeing through our FitGRATITUDE, FitMIND, FitBODY, and FitSOUL initiatives. We're excited to announce that Stephanie, one of our ER/ICU Supervisors, is the winner of our grand prize giveaway, including an Oura Ring, VHA mug, and VHA f***y pack! 🎉

We are so excited to welcome Stacy Nelson, DVM, MBA, back home to VHA! 🐾💙 Dr. Nelson brings decades of experience, compassion, and a deep love for the human-animal bond to her role as an Emergency Doctor. We are honored to have her back as part of the VHA family.

Dr. Nelson's passion for caring for animals began in childhood, inspired by her grandmother, a nurse whose farm became her favorite place to spend time growing up. Surrounded by animals and a role model dedicated to helping others, she discovered early on that caring for both people and animals was her calling.

After earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Florida in 2000, she built a career centered around helping patients through both routine and critical moments. As an Emergency Doctor, she thrives in the fast-paced environment of emergency medicine and finds the greatest reward in helping patients while supporting the families who love them.

Dr. Nelson was drawn back to VHA because of the challenging cases, collaborative environment, and exceptional team. One of her favorite things about working here is the people. "I love the team. These are amazing people," she shares.

Outside of the hospital, Dr. Nelson enjoys spending time with her husband, Doug, their three children, Jocie, Bobby, and Hallie, five beloved dogs, several horses, and practicing yoga, which helps keep her grounded through the demands of emergency medicine.

Today marks a very special day at VHA!💙 Not only is it Dr. Nations’ birthday, but today also marks the 3-year anniversary of opening our Specialty Referral and 24/7 ER & ICU Center.

Over the last year, we’ve added new doctors, new specialists, and expanded our ability to serve Polk County and beyond at an even greater capacity.

What began as a one-doctor practice under Dr. John Maxwell has grown into a 17-doctor veterinary campus bridging the gap in care where it has been needed most.

Today, we can’t help but celebrate Dr. Nations for his heart, his vision, and his relentless pursuit of delivering not only exceptional medicine and exceptional care to the pets we serve, but also to the people under his leadership.

We’re not always sure when he sleeps, but we do know this: every day, he is chasing a bigger vision that unifies us all around our mission of helping people, pets, and planet become healthy, happy, and healed.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Nations. Thank you for leading with vision, courage, compassion, and heart. Your legacy is felt in every patient, every client, every team member, and every life impacted through VHA.

A planned C-section can mean peace of mind, for both you and your dog. ❤️

Our goal is to give mom the safest experience possible while helping every puppy enter the world with the healthiest start in life. During surgery, your pet is cared for by a dedicated team providing:
• Gentle anesthesia
• IV fluids and continuous monitoring
• Pain management before and after surgery
• A trained nurse for every puppy at delivery

Each puppy is immediately supported with:
• Breathing stimulation
• Umbilical cord care
• Heat support
• Heart rate and breathing monitoring
• Emergency medications if needed

Certain breeds are at higher risk for difficult deliveries, including:
French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Pugs, Chihuahuas, and dogs with a history of prior emergency C-sections or dystocia.
