Laurel Valley Iris Farm

Laurel Valley Iris Farm Laurel Valley is a small urban farm specializing in bearded iris cultivars. We are nestled between the mountains and the coast of North Carolina.

We provide online and local iris rhizome sales. I have been a lover of plants all my life, even at a very early age. I grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina in Madison County, near the Tennessee state line. My close relatives owned a nursery business within walking distance of my home growing up and it was always a treat to visit the greenhouses. As a youngster, I spent countless hour

s in the woods from early spring until late fall, gathering NC native plants and bringing them back home to cultivate. Being outdoors and in nature is where I have always felt connected. I first became interested in irises in early adulthood. Had anyone asked me then if I would have ever thought about opening a small iris growers business, I would have not had an answer. What initially began as hobby growing has grown into a passion of mine. I love to share my love and knowledge of irises with others. I have enjoyed selling locally and I am working towards developing a website and pursuing online sells as well! There is so much to look forward to with growing irises. During bloom season, everyday is a wonderful surprise. The color combinations and cultivars are endless and there is something special about seeing that first spring bloom finally open after a long, dark, winter!

Three out of four crosses appear to have taken. Fingers crossed that they produce mature seeds that can be further propagated. Not too shabby for my first attempt. Now we wait…

We have surpassed goal for this season with the acquisition of 485 new Iris cultivars to be planted on the farm! That takes our total count up to 1005 different named cultivars for 2026. The season is not over and I have a couple more growers to tap into before Iris-buying is complete. It’s going to be a super busy summer, but I’m here for the party! 😂
I’m so ready to be able to spread out in a new space!

This is not a sales post.

When it comes to washing rhizomes, you develop methods that can serve as a dual purpose. Anything and everything becomes a place to wash and dry after you dig. In today’s episode of: “How do I want to handle washing these rhizomes?” I decided that the chain link fence served as a perfect rack to use for washing and drying. Now before anyone says anything, I reversed the drying position by flipping them upside down so that the fans themselves would drain as well and not hold water. After they were dry to touch, I placed a fan to aid in the drying process. They will dry upside down overnight on racks. Whew! Tomorrow after work will be a wash, rinse and repeat kinda day.

This must be some cosmic joke! 😂 I was out cleaning up some stalks, not an iris bloom in site because they’re done…or at least I thought everything was done blooming for the season. I guess someone is going to get the “last word” in the garden after all.

Thank you for the rain that is falling in NC! We desperately need this dust bowl to settle. It’s been horribly dry.

Two out of my four crosses look like they have taken. Now we wait to see if they develop and produce seeds. 🤔 I wanted to give it a try; therefore, I did not overextend the number of crosses created since we will be moving all the irises up to the farm by summer’s end. I’ll have to leave these two until the very last minute so the seed pods can hopefully, and successfully, mature. This was a learning opportunity for me and a trial run, so be mindful and respectful with commentary.

Okay, I think my hilling process is getting better with each row I lay off. We are doing this all by hand so it takes some man power to create the mounds without machinery. Several folks have asked why I am moving irises in May? To answer that question honestly: I have placed some thought into the process and I am a planner by nature. I know that there is no way I can move 500+ cultivars, plant the other 500 that I have ordered this season that will be coming in June, July, & August, dig, wash/dry, and ship out all the orders from Laurel Valley, place our house on the market in August, still maintain my sanity while working full time and be an active participant in building another house. 🤪As an added notation, irises in North Carolina (in my section of the state) do better when they are transplanted in the months of May and June, hands down. They struggle in our heat during July and August. There is a rationale behind the madness. You gotta trust the process! 😉
